Reasons you would want to be Jewish.
3) For the small gold bag placed under my neck.
|
5) Pride in being part of a great civilisation and culture.

The fashionable small knit kippahs dont cover it all that well. And Ive steadily gone from one bobby pin will do, to two bobby pins, to "QOTM, do you have one of those big hairclip thingies" At this stage Im thinking of getting one of those big funky colorful caps that jews from the "East" wear, but QOTM thinks they look too hippyish. |
I've always wanted to convert to secular judaism.

From what I can gather, the wealthy Jews tend to be supportive of their community, so that being Jewish means you can get a lot of freebies, for studies, travel, and even business. nope. Some courses and educational travel are subsidized, but its almost never free. Only free travel I know of is the Taglit program, for high school age teens to go Israel. I dont think even that covers airfare. I dont really know the details, but Im intent on learning them. OTOH Jewish day schools are often less expensive than other private schools. But then they also typically have larger class sizes, etc. Oh, and they hit the parents up for donations. Subsidies to businesses that I know of are only for poor Jews, mainly immigrants, and are in the forms of low interest loans. And its pretty community specific, I think. |

Her recipes, and the way she writes, are an absolute joy. I reread her book on coffee each year. All hail Roden! http://www.penguin.co.uk/nf/Author/A...013895,00.html I have her book on sephardic jewish cooking. QOTM and I have used a couple of the recipes, notably the one for grape leaves. And the descriptions of the communities, and the relationships of the food customs to the community histories, make it a good book to read even if youre not hungry. |
Coming from Canada, being a writer and Jewish as well, I have impeccable paranoia credentials. Mordecai Richler.

WTF paranoid ?
What's paranoid in noting that people who went to the same schools, grew up together, etc, are doing business together when they're older ? |
From what I can gather, the peculiar linguistic-religious-political situation in Montreal historically made the Montreal Jewish community more insular and tightknit than most in North America.
And yeah, Koreans do stuff like that, Viet Namese, etc. Sicilians used to. Catholics in general? I doubt it. At least here, where the Catholics are of pretty diverse national origins. So I think I agrees with both of youse. |

Give it up. I'm not saying it's 'peculiarly' Jewish, in a kind of essential way. Just remarking that it's only normal that a small, exiled minority, would acknowledge the benefits of sticking together to preserve their cultural specificity. Communities build their own, informal social networks. There are many human sentiments of solidarity that arise from proximity... If your neighbor doesn't have anything to eat because he's lost his job, you'll give him something, but still you're probably not UPSing flour and vegetables to people 500km away from your city. The French Canadians in New England were quite well known for this, IIUC. |

Give it up. Give what up ? I didn't say YOU were paranoid. Now you are acting paranoid. I just quoted Mordecai Richler- a Canadian, from Montreal, who happens to be Jewish. He's quite well-known, you know. Your post reminded me of a joke: Two men are talking. One says- " And that's another thing. I heard those Jews sank the Titanic too." " What ? That's crazy! It was an iceberg, you fool." " That's what I mean. Iceberg, Greenberg, Goldberg- those Jews are all the same. " I could observe that the French Canadians I've met over here seem quite clannish- they all seem to gravitate towards Quebec House sooner or later, and go to showings of French language films, et cetera, et cetera. Two of the events listed in the Quebec House calendar website are suspiciously French sounding. http://www.mri.gouv.qc.ca/london/en/ Clearly, the Quebecois ...high-ups are definitely willing to use their influence to help other people of the Quebecois community with business opportunities http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif |
