It's not illegal in NY. What is illegal is actually getting married to more than one person, but if you can beat the five year statute of limitations, you will legally be married to more than one person.

Default Should polygamy be illegal?
As far as I'm concerned, it should be legal if all are "consenting adults"... I hold the same view for gay marriages. Consenting adults who love each other and want to get married should be allowed to.

They won't take this very well at all, and a rise in criminal behaviour from said men is inevitable.

A few women will marry more than one man, but sheer biology means that polygamy tends to suit men more than women.

In theory, things like polygamy and polyamory sound fine, and there are always a few people who could probably make it work in a non-exploitative way, but for most people it will be a disaster waiting to happen, and it's simply more efficient to ban it for everyone.

And what when one spouse is telling the doctors to save the patient, but the other is telling them not to take heroic measures? Who do the doctors listen to?

I think it should be illegal due to all the past negatives that has come out of this practice. Not to mention the inbreeding that usually occurs with it. Hell if you want to have many partners what is the need or the desire to be "Married" anyway?

As hard as it is to find a compatable individual, you vote for polygamy. Thanks. I needed the laugh. Hmmm... some of us have been married for years

If you actually took the time to read what many people are saying... you would see that people think it should be legal... not necessarily that it something they would want to do... hell... one wife is more than enough for me

Actually, even monogamy as a lifestyle is illegal in 7 states.

Moo. Problem is, under current law, if x goes into debt, the creditor can go after Y's assets. Which presumably means Y can be forced to use Ts assets to pay off X's debt, even though T never consented to the marriag to X.

Thats because polygamy in this country was tied to a specific religion and has been illegal for a long time. There are or have been polygamist cultures where women had multiple husbands. When we say polygamy should be legal, it should be legal for women to have multiple husbands too.
