Three women are married to a serviceman. There are seven children. Dad gets killed on active duty. The state pays orphan's benefits for seven children?

Widows benefits for three wives? Do they each get a third of a share?

It should be legal in modern societies where women are fairly well empowered, and where divorce can be initiated without any significant hassle by any partner. So the US and Europe qualify.

But the laws must be made to make sure that there won't be one absolutely dominated partner: in most countries where polygamy is actually practiced, it tends to be a tool for male domination.

It is illegal. Utah had to outlaw it for them to reach statehood in the 19th century.

Not that I'm personally that opposed to it, but aren't divorces between two people messy enough? I mean, come on here... Who would get to keep wife #4 and husband #2 here? And their kids?

And jesus, what if wife #6 wanted to divorce wife #5, but they both wanted to keep husband #2? Just...

Well, Imran and other lawyers would win. Sorry in the instance of polyogemy there isnt husband number 2 there is only one hubby that wnats to have wifes # 1 thru infinity so the husband confusion is out here.

But back to pologamy, why is it necesaary in these relationsships to be married if these folks want to live like this why dont they just all shack up??? I dont think I have ever heard of laws preveting these folks to live together

Marriages are expensive, too. With Poly-marriage, that's just a lot of money down on silly multiple celebrations. And with polymarriage, that's just a lot of wierdness. I can't imagine Agathon and Asher tying the knot.

Then again, why are divorces so expensive? Because they're worth it. ZING!

Given the way society is, Polyandry would be more realistic. Love triangles and all. meh.

I don't think duration was the point, so lack of it is not a measure of success or failure.

A workable polygamy should work like the EU: unanimity must be had for every new member in the union

Polygamy doesn't nessecarily mean one male and several females. Yes it does.

You're talking about "polyandry"...

Marriage should be illegal due to the all the past negatives that have come out of that practice . Thats one way to look at it. Since Divorce rates are hi now days. But on the other hand i seem to think common law marraige living together arrangements are far more common now days anyway.

Britain and US must cement their alliance by having Bush wed Blair. It's for the good of their countries. Stability.

if the women were smart they would team together and withhold sex. They should form a union.

It's simply a word without any real meaning. Let's be inclusive with our new definition.
