Is the XDA forum the best place for tips and tricks for the SGS2 (and android in general)?
until friday last week i would have said ` yes` but the whole ICS leak and the bullshit that flowed with it - trolls calling devs and an admin liars when they had it hands on and partial firmware - its not so great for now.

lots of good stuff though (aside from that incident) can get direct help from app devs - in so fact if you have the time you could even get help to make your own to do exactly what you wanted to

or I could just visit jailbreakme.com on my iphone... kkthxbye
Singing the praises of a critical PDF exploit that Apple hurriedly patched?

The exploit that made jailbreakme possible was a very bad hole (root acces through simply visiting a website). Thankfully comex and co used the exploit for good.

Goodness, I feel like a complete Luddite here [thumbup] (Nokia 2012 as I don't really need more than a phone and occasional text).

That said, why is there any emphasis on 'games'? I can understand some argument about app's, but as a toy?

I get all my goodies from XDA and other sites like:
http://www.androidpolice.com/
http://www.androidcentral.com/
http://www.phandroid.com/

Just stick them in your RSS feeds and you'll find the odd gem article on Android.

And?

You made it out like it's some complex task to root an android. Which it isn't. Your responce does nothing to change the opinion that you are still clueless about Android.

Typical, because Google never had a security hole in any of its products. [rolleyes]

Evidently, since calling Facebook a time-waster is so passe these days, Angry Birds has been accused of costing business owners "over 1.5 Billion Dollars" due to lost work time... [rofl]

Yeah, XDA has a lot of noobs, but it's still a great resource. You just have to filter better now.

Nobody is saying Google is safety king, but you can't seriously sit here and tell us that going to a website and a simple script on that page able to change root system settings on your phone is ever a good thing for security.

Custom keyboards: Swype, SwiftKey, Smart Keyboard, Thumb Keyboard, SlideIT, e.t.c
Custom launchers: ADW EX, LauncherPro, GoLauncher, ZEEM, SPB Shell 3D, Regina Launcher, Launcher 7.
Custom notification sounds: Ability to change any notification sound to any within your music library.
Custom system apps: Go SMS, TouchPal Dialler, Dialler One, DWP Contacts, Dolphin Browser, Firefox, Opera (all can be set as default browser unlike on iOS where Safari will always open on links clicked in Mail e.t.c)

You have a lot of opinions on Android and yet portray yourself as someone with very little experience with it.
But why would I want to change all of that, when everything just works?

Woah Mr Rolly eyes! I never said Google was perfect.

Every single root exploit on Android is bad on their part but, I've never seen any publicly released root exploit on Android that involved going to a website and clicking install.

Google's equivalent cockup is the "one click" root exploits that made the Droid Dream trojans possible. (Droid Dream used the same exploits to gain root access as the "one click" methods without the users knowledge to insert its payload onto the affected phone.)

Refer to:

As to customisable, seriously what is so customisable about Android, please define what makes it so much better?.
Some people like choice, they like being able to tweak their devices the way they want. Some people want it to "just work" and accept what's there. It's a matter of preference, but having the option is always nice.

Same can be said about pre-built systems vs. building your own computer.

Hey, stock Nexus S "just works" for me. Stock Galaxy S II also "just works" for me.

I was trying to educate you into what was possible on Android as you seem a bit clueless about what it is capable of and was hoping you'd see why some people like that level of customisation.

Because 3-4 pages of tiles is f*cking awful to look at imo, and would much prefer the choice of some nice looking homescreens.[thumbdown]

Some like choice, but nobody is going to go to that level of customisation unless they are a right geek! When comparing phones, you have to factor in Joe Bloggs. He is the one buying most of the phones out there, and they will mostly run it stock in terms of customisation but may well download a few apps.

No, you said a little bit more then just "it's easier to root an iphone"

I'd go one further and say it's far easier to jailbreak an iphone than to root an android phone, such a piss about.
That, to me, sounds like you trying to make it out that rooting an android is more complex then it really is. Or that you just don't know how easy it is.

You do realize Android "just works" too right? My mesozoic parents even use Android phones now, and it's not like they customize it much.
