Default New rifle, what to get?
$600~$900 maximum.

Semi-Auto.

I keep changing my dang mind. Not sure what to get.
I am currently thinking M1 Garand. Nice big bullet. I have also thought about an AK74. Ammo is a lot cheaper than .223, non-corrosive at that. It is actually cheaper than the 7.62x54R spam can I bought.
But then I always think of the .223/5.45x39 as just being people killer bullets. These bullets really aren't even good enough for medium sized game and I am pretty sure are not even legal for hunting. Plus if I did have to use them, there is no knock down punch.

There is the AK47, but then I think that I would rather get a Ruger Mini-Thirty (both 7.62x39.)

I was rifle shopping and decided I wanted a Ruger Mini 14. Then, decided I wanted a larger caliber and so I decided I wanted a Mini 30. Then, I saw they were about $1000 so I decided on the AK.
I got my SGL21 for $500 back a couple years ago. They're $800.00 now, so I think I came out ok.

I guess I just wanted to say, I know how you feel. If you decide on an AK, get a nice one. There are lots of cheap, crappy ones out there which would be fine if you just needed a gun.
Probably can't go wrong with the Mini 14 or Mini 30.

What I like about these is they're good defense/assualt rifles but can also be used for hunting. The Mini 14 might be good for whitetail deer, but if you're going hog/boar hunting, it might just piss him off enough to come try to eat you. But, you might be a better shot than me.

Doesnt matter. That is why I am also considering the M1 Garand. Uses .30-06 (7.63x63)
I even considered the M1 Carbine for a while too.

And .223 is 5.56.
Id consider 5.56, but 5.45 is a ton cheaper and they are pretty similar. 5.45 is Russia's answer to the 5.56. Not a huge fan of either round, other than the 5.45 is dirt dirt cheap.

I like the looks of the SGL21 but I would almost rather try and get a Mini-Thirty. But then I could always just step up a notch and get the M1 with the larger caliber.

I may be a large caliber man? I love shooting the Nagant.

Oops, didn't see the .223, just saw 5.45 as I glazed over. tl;dr syndrome

Any quality/reputable used/new gun shops around you there?

I have found some KILLER deals (Sexy GUNS) @ Cabela's here in AZ. I just wish I had a "no limit" credit card. /drool

I know a few, but they don't really seem to be all that great.

I was shopping for pistols a couple weeks ago, and the Academy had a much larger selection then the places that I went with comparable prices.
I am going to be buying a pistol as soon as my brother buys my truck, and it seems like I will actually be getting from a guy who runs his business from home, lol.

Figure on what you want to use it for, calibre/type/cost/availability of ammo, magazine capacity, if you want to use a scope, reliability/reputation, etc.

When you've got that sorted, it should be much easier to decide on a weapon.

Your a funny guy!
Might be somewhat interested if it shot .357 or something similar, but I might as well build a potato launcher with that thing basically being a pee shooter.

Though their other rifles are pretty cool. I like their style.

As far as what I would like the rifle to do, all I really care for is being able to shoot a little quicker than a bolt action. More for fun when shooting at targets (not live.)
I'm not a huge fan of the .223/5.45 due to their characteristics of tumbling and not having a lot of punch if I were to go hunting with it. Might be good for smaller game though?

Bullet cheapness is always nice, and the 5.45 is spot on. Commercial ammo is even cheaper than any Russian surplus caliber. AK74's and there are evens some AR15s that shoot this round and they cost around $800.

Might just setting for an AK74 or that SGL31 due to cheap ammo and better suited for small game?
I do like shooting 7.62x54 a lot, and an M1 Garand would be nice shooting a similar sized bullet but semi-auto.

I think a lot of my problem isn't just what rifle I'd like, but what caliber I want. I like shooting the larger calibers, but then I keep looking at the 5.45 which just how dirt cheap the ammo is but then it isn't like I just want to unless lead randomly like many do on youtube.

I could understand that if I was a uneducated dropped and worked at BK with that level of cash, but Im in school and have a good job, so thank you very much. in due time I will be paying my fair share in taxes.

Wanting to buy something that is fun, just like people spend thousands of dollars of consoles and video games.

Then in that case I recommend a Mosin–Nagant. The ammo is cheap, it has a good kick to it, and it's easy to tinker with.

The gun is also pretty cheap.

Check. I have an M38 Carbine and love it. Though it isn't semi-auto and that is what I am looking for.

Actually shot 15 rounds yesterday figuring out how off the sight is and just trying to get rid of my russian surplus ammo.

Ummm... no. If you shoot 5.56 ammo in a .223 chamber, you could have some serious issues.

On the other hand, a 5.56 chamber will eat .223 nicely. [yes]

Auto Ordanance M1 Carbine for $700. Shoots the .30cal carbine round. Not priced that bad either. ~$160 for 500rds.

AK74 for $800 (More than likely from Russian Arsenal)or S&W AR15. 5.45x39. ~$138 for 750rds.

M1 Garand ~$800. .30-06. ~$135 for 200rds.

Ruger Mini-Thrity ~$800. 7.62x39. ~$105 for 500rds.

These are the guns that I have mainly been looking at, and caliber sizes. At the end of the day, not really sure what to pick up.

Maybe go for the AK74 or M1 Carbine just so that I can get my wife into shooting. She won't shoot the Nagant after the first and only time she shot it.

Go for the Mini Thirty if you don't want a PITB rifle when it comes to cleaning... by design, the action of the Mini-14/30 is self-cleaning and requires very little maintenance.

Thank you sir. That is a pretty big plus for me right there.

Which caliber type would you get? Mini14 or Mini30?

Don't get those they suck... get a quality AK-47 and be done with it. I would get a Hungarian if you can find one or get an American made from somewhere like here http://www.ak-103.com/rifles.html
