Unless your talking about a very modern high performance auto or a semi auto such as the VAG DSG boxes, you're better off with manuals for economy, acceleration and a more involving, not to mention smoother driving experience. Buy an auto for your gran or if all you do is drive during rush hour grid lock.

Again, you mean in the UK this is true. Manuals are almost totally pointless in America on normal road cars I would say.

*sigh*. No, manual cars only make sense in a few situations. In the UK it's generally a bad idea to buy an automatic with your own money (in my opinion) because automatic versions are generally £1,000+ more than manual versions and usually use more fuel to boot (and at £6.29 ($10) a gallon we like to save as much as possible.

Now, while there are some tight and twisty roads in the states, you can't really do them justice in a normal car, so why bother getting a manual?

Well yeah. It's generalising a bit to say "in America an auto is best" just as much as it is to say "manual is better than auto".

The point I getting across is that generally speaking a manual will always allow the possibility of better economy, acceleration and generally more involvement. But the advancement of auto boxes is slowly changing some of these points.

Wrong. Driving a manual is absolutely pointless unless it is a sports car or you are doing something specific. Normal driving with a manual pretty much is useless.
Depends on the driver and their attitude to driving.
I loathe automatics and will take a manual any time as I like to experience driving a vehicle, you prefer a self-shifter, fair enough.

BTW, folks, modern automatics are frequently better for economy than a manual, unless very carefully driven - especially round town.

Fair point, I'll revise my statement to an auto is generally a more sensible option in America.

This isn't necessarily true. The latest BMW/Audi/VW engines coupled with manual gearboxes produce fewer emmissions, are more economical and can shift gears faster than an auto.

People that drive autos mainly do so because they are convenient or they don't know how to drive a manual.

He did say frequently...

People on here are so quick to try and put others down that a lot of you don't even seem to take the time to read a post before jumping on it.

I drove with my Dad for the first time in years the other day and he is by far the most crazy driver I've ever ridden with - just drives way to fast and too close to other people. I got some ease from the fact he used to be an RAF pilot but still I was glad to get out when we got home!!
Isn't OHP in the RAF? He got done by the rozzers I seem to recall

I have no intention to try and put anyone down and Gordo did say 'frequent', which would imply its common. But before I bought my current car I did a sh!tload of research and could not find one case where the automatic version of a car was more economical than the manual equivalent.

Anyways, just wanted to see if anyone ever noticed any other habits of drivers...
I hate when people driving slow in traffic they stop.. they wait till car infront of them is a couple of yards away and then heavely accelerate and than hit the brakes to stop again!

I mean.. F*ck.. drive slowly.. if you can't.. get off the road! [cursing]

People who ride with me seems to think I'm scary when I'm behind the wheel. As in I turn really fast and speeding.

I prefer to drive manual so that people who don't know how to drive stick can't ask me to borrow my truck.

My biggest pet peeve is when i ride in other's car and they don't have smooth shifting skill that makes your head jerk forward every time they shifts. Another peeve is when following behind a car that goes fairly slow and they time it just right so that the traffic light turns red on me and have to stop.

LOL, don't come to Australia then. I've now been to 3 different states and one territory and the way people drive is just so incredibly different.

When I drove to Melbourne, everyone drove to the speed limit but drove incredible crazy, like suicide drivers at slow speed. Worse then Sydney.

When you go to Sydney it's like everyone see's the "Welcome to Sydney" sign as a "Welcome to Germans Autobahn". As soon as I passed that sign everyone went from following the speed limit to doing 20+ over.

In Canberra everyone followed the speed limit and everyone followed the road rules. It was an awesome experience, ruined only by half their roads starting of as dual lanes with a giant road sign "FORM ONE LANE" and then the single lanes are super wide you could fit 3 cars through them.

When I was in the Gold Coast, it reminded me a little of Sydney and Melbourne combined.

But seriously, an Australia forum I visit had a thread called "Driving Antics that make you boil" or something like that, it's now on it's 6th thread with almost 7,000 posts all up.[rofl]

I could type up a list of things that boil me, but it would be too long lol.

Come to Chicago in America. We will give you inane, slow speed limits that no one obeys, and an Urban Rally Driving experience.

Go to florida, and you get some sweet rides, but old people who drive 20 under the limit and can't remember to use the turn signal, but when they do, they forget to turn it off too.

Then you can go to New York where $%&# YOU! Is a standard greeting, but they drive alot like in Chicago.

*These are all Stereotypes BTW. But even Stereotypes have a hint of truth.

The only reason we drive fast here in Sydney is because the traffic is always so bad, we gotta make up the time when we can! We even get cops tooting us to go faster when we are only doing 20 over. [rofl]

And you know the best part: by law al speed cameras here must have at least 3 signs telling you when they are coming up. So usual Sydney practise is: Autobahn it until you see a sign, go slow, wave politely to the police officer, go past the camera, then pedal to the metal!

I can vouch for this.
