Default WTH customs duty from amazon.co.uk order
i recently ordered 2 dresses off of amazon.co.uk and upon delivery i got hit with 50% import duty. Nowhere on the page that i purchased these from did it say it was a chinese importer.

I can understand ebay as more often than not the items location is nearly always clearly stated and that there's a possibility of paying import duty

Im not even sure what to think now, customs duty from an order on amazon.co.uk [cursing]

I suggest contacting Amazon, UK, for a start - seems a bit of a rip by the vendor to avoid paying duty to get more profit!

Even presuming you aren't being totally ripped off, 50% sounds a lot of import duty for fabric! We import a lot of different stuff on a daily basis and our rule of thumb is around 30% import duty. I'm not even going to pretend I understand it, but import duty is calculated on the type of item and the number of different products in an item. For example, if we import a shovel they work out the duty on the metal and the wood handle.

I think the 50% duty is just my country; Ireland. i have never been charged more than 21% for things i have imported

while i was at work dhl called with a parcel (more christmas presents, an assortment of bolero/ cardigan things) which had a declared value of 30 USD / 22 EUR. the import duty was €16.16: which is 73% The actual value of the order was about £40 though, but there was no way for them to know that.

It sounds like amazon's mess to clean up. If you go to www.amazon.ie it redirects to www.amazon.co.uk so it isn't like they have a dedicated site.
