Haha, I love the part when you pretty much say you had a choice of obeying the law and looking guilty, or breaking it and looking innocent! [rofl]

Nah, but in all seriousness it was a bitch of a situation and I might've done the same if I was in your position. But I've learnt from past experience (and losing my license for 3 months on one of those experiences) that no matter how justified my situation may be, it's just not worth the hassle of potentially getting into trouble.

That said, just see how far you get, and good luck. You weren't being a total douche or anything so that's cool.

Picked one up myself recently.

55mph in a 40mph limit, the bloody signs are only 5 inches across though and it was on a back road too.

Just after a long sweeping bend, there's a lay-by and the camera van was parked up in that, took the corner at 60mph, saw the van, slammed on the brakes and well the rest is history.

I'm guessing it will be 3 points and £60 fine, but I'll take the speed awareness course if they offer it, but its doubtful they will around this area.

So I'll just pay the fine, take the points and be more aware of the van and my speed in the future.

I don't know the fines maybe be higher but points stay on your license for a much shorter time.

And what the hell is this offense? Furious driving - 3 to 9 points

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...ns/DG_10022425
its actually not a motoring offence , but the offence carries a motoring penalty because its related to driving;

its actualy section 35 of the offences agaisnt the persons act 1861;

basically the driving aspect of road rage - any physical injury will also result in an assault charge as well.

Anyone else think of some hot chick dressed as a judge giving him a good old fashioned spanking as he's bent over her knees?

Hmmm, think that may increase crime...

Ha, well yeah that was it. I didn't associate the patrol car with being a camera so I didnt think i'd get done for the speed. If it was a police van I probably would have reacted differently.

Default Got spanked for speeding... advice?
I know it's wrong but I shall explain the story so you can advise accordingly.

Came off a duel-carriageway onto a wide single carriageway road following a pretty quick Merc. When joining this single-carriageway road me and the leading Merc were instantly up behind a slow car so overtook when still accelerating as oncoming traffic was clear. At this moment the Merc must have seen the police car and pulled in, ahead of slow car doing 60 (which was the limit). This left me out in the wrong lane, alongside these 2 cars with no way to follow the Merc, because the gap between car's wasn't there now the Merc slowed down.

So it was either break and slot in behind the 2 cars, which would make me look guilty. Or put my tow down and get past the Merc, as there was now some oncoming traffic and I didn't want to be 3 car's wide going past the police car. (although it's very common to be 3 car's wide on that road).

Obviously in hindsight I should have braked, but I actually passed the Merc and peaked at 77mph apparently.

Option is £60 and 3 points or take to court.

If you can't afford to appoint a solicitor then take the fine / points or you'll end up a lot worse off.

As you said, should have slowed down and pulled back in, who cares how guilty you "look" it's all about what they can show.

Not much you can do about it.... what would you're defense be if you went to court? Seems like you were in the wrong, pay the fine and chalk it up to experience.

Agreed 100% - if you'd braked they might have suspected your guilt but wouldn't have the speed info to prove it.

If you'd had to absolutely slam on the anchors and they'd seen it happen they might have pulled you over to question you about it but in all probability wouldn't have taken it further.

Looking guilty doesn't put points on your licence, whereas:
...I actually passed the Merc and peaked at 77mph apparently. Doing 17 mph over the speed limit will do.

Option is £60 and 3 points or take to court. Do what I did - take the points and admit to yourself that you, as a driver, were at fault. We all do it, some more frequently than others, and this time you were caught at it. I took £120 and 6 points: I went through the usual period of blaming everybody but eventually came around and grew up a bit. At the end of the day, regardless as to what I thought, I was over the indicated speed limit and I paid the price. I still am, 4 years on, thanks to hike in insurance costs - all because of being sloppy. I genuinely think I'm a better driver for it now; I honestly hadn't realised how little attention I would give to my speed.

Thanks, Yeah well, it seem's obvious now, but at the time it required so much more effort, my instinctive reaction was to just put my toe down.

I'd be following this Merc happily for the last 20 minutes doing maybe a touch over the limit at times, but nothing that was by any means stupid. It was just very unlucky that a Police car was there and that he slowed down at that moment in time. No police car and we'd have both passed the slow car probably at about 70. Meaning I probably went faster than I would have because of the police car.

No idea how fast the slow car got up to, but he was accelerating slowly off a roundabout. I presume he peaked at 60 eventually.

It was on the Guisbrough by-pass.

I can see i've explained this slightly badly...

When I first saw the police car, I maybe wasn't breaking any law. But I thought I would be if I didn't get out the middle of the road as there was an oncoming car approaching. So I then proceeded to break the law by accelerating to get back into my lane. I think this was my flawed theory at the time.

My lord, you guys get off easy. In the US, 17 over would be about a $250 ticket.

Yeah your speed laws are very strict. One of the few things I'd not like about living there.

Just take it. I got 4 points and a £2,000 means tested fine for 99mph on a Scottish motorway, and I didn't contest.

It depends,I've found usually if you are nice to the officer and admit you were speeding you're more likely to just get a ticket for "failure to obey posted limits".

I got caught at 98mph in my old outback and the cop told me it would be enough to take away my license right then and there,40mph over the posted limit, but since I was nice about it and owned up to it he gave me the lesser charge.

That has worked for me about 4 times now, though,if you're out of state your results will probably not be the same lol.
