I know it's wrong but I shall explain the story so you can advise accordingly.
Came off a duel-carriageway onto a wide single carriageway road following a pretty quick Merc. When joining this single-carriageway road me and the leading Merc were instantly up behind a slow car so overtook when still accelerating as oncoming traffic was clear. At this moment the Merc must have seen the police car and pulled in, ahead of slow car doing 60 (which was the limit). This left me out in the wrong lane, alongside these 2 cars with no way to follow the Merc, because the gap between car's wasn't there now the Merc slowed down. So it was either break and slot in behind the 2 cars, which would make me look guilty. Or put my tow down and get past the Merc, as there was now some oncoming traffic and I didn't want to be 3 car's wide going past the police car. (although it's very common to be 3 car's wide on that road). Obviously in hindsight I should have braked, but I actually passed the Merc and peaked at 77mph apparently. Option is £60 and 3 points or take to court. |

As you said, should have slowed down and pulled back in, who cares how guilty you "look" it's all about what they can show. If you'd had to absolutely slam on the anchors and they'd seen it happen they might have pulled you over to question you about it but in all probability wouldn't have taken it further. |

So it was either break and slot in behind the 2 cars, which would make me look guilty.... ...I actually passed the Merc and peaked at 77mph apparently. Doing 17 mph over the speed limit will do. Option is £60 and 3 points or take to court. Do what I did - take the points and admit to yourself that you, as a driver, were at fault. We all do it, some more frequently than others, and this time you were caught at it. I took £120 and 6 points: I went through the usual period of blaming everybody but eventually came around and grew up a bit. At the end of the day, regardless as to what I thought, I was over the indicated speed limit and I paid the price. I still am, 4 years on, thanks to hike in insurance costs - all because of being sloppy. I genuinely think I'm a better driver for it now; I honestly hadn't realised how little attention I would give to my speed. |

Thanks, Yeah well, it seem's obvious now, but at the time it required so much more effort, my instinctive reaction was to just put my toe down.
I'd be following this Merc happily for the last 20 minutes doing maybe a touch over the limit at times, but nothing that was by any means stupid. It was just very unlucky that a Police car was there and that he slowed down at that moment in time. No police car and we'd have both passed the slow car probably at about 70. Meaning I probably went faster than I would have because of the police car. |

I can see i've explained this slightly badly...
When I first saw the police car, I maybe wasn't breaking any law. But I thought I would be if I didn't get out the middle of the road as there was an oncoming car approaching. So I then proceeded to break the law by accelerating to get back into my lane. I think this was my flawed theory at the time. |

My lord, you guys get off easy. In the US, 17 over would be about a $250 ticket. I got caught at 98mph in my old outback and the cop told me it would be enough to take away my license right then and there,40mph over the posted limit, but since I was nice about it and owned up to it he gave me the lesser charge. That has worked for me about 4 times now, though,if you're out of state your results will probably not be the same lol. |

It depends,I've found usually if you are nice to the officer and admit you were speeding you're more likely to just get a ticket for "failure to obey posted limits". Though, unless the 60/3pts is going to hurt, just pay it, don't do it again and be done with it. |

No I have not. What's that. Not sure if they have it anywhere else as that would probably be the best option if available, but if it isn't an option, its your choice. |
