Default Anyone else run?
Wanting to loose a-bit of body weight so a couple of months ago i took up running. Going from being completely unfit where I could only run for around 5mins before having to walk again to today where i've just finished 4 miles in 37mins, I think I've improved pretty good.

Anyway, I seem to be stuck at around the 30-40min mark of constant running before I have to stop. Anyone got any tips? I want to be able to push it to around an hour of good quality running. Maybe I just need more training.

I run 6 days a week except on the elliptical machine in attempt to save my joints. It definitely gets easier the longer you keep it up. The biggest trick for lengthening the runs is pretty much as simple as making sure you are properly hydrated and pace yourself. If I am low on time I will go full throttle for 20-30 mins then on days when I am not as constrained on time I will go for 45 mins at a slower pace.

With that said, it is amazing how much more energy it gives you throughout the day and how it helps elevate mood.

yeah I've found that already im extremely more motivated to do things other than sitting on my xbox. Also find it easier to get up in the morning. Wish i would of started it years ago to be honest. At the moment im running 3 times a week normally for around 30mins. If its raining or i have joint pain ill go on the exercise bike instead.

I totally agree. Running is great exercise, but as Mute pointed out it's very taxing on your body. Apparently my feet over-pronate which causes all sorts of pain, so I had to buy a pair of specialized running shoes to avoid this. Even with the shoes, due to having ankle injuries in the past, I can only run about 4 or 5 miles before heavy pain sets in. To avoid this, I usually use the cardio machines when at the gym, and do MMA training on the side a few times a week.

I run all the time.

The number one hindrance to distance running is over-heating. Dress appropriately (which means, stay a bit under-dressed for the weather.

I used to hate running, but now I do marathons (Got one coming up in a few weeks as a matter of fact).

A major factor is confidence. Pace yourself, do not pull hard off of the line. Start at a pace that you can feasibly maintain miles later.

Breathing: Start a steady in-the-nose, out-the-mouth breathing pattern immediately and focus on the breathing until it is on auto-pilot.

Do not lean forward. This is how people hurt their lower backs. When you get tired, you will tend to lean forward, fight this like an enemy.

Keep training.

I use to run 1-2 miles everyday when I was in school. I didn't really like running but I really do like the "runners high" you get from cardio.

I'm running again after my back problems of the last few years (still there, but physio has confirmed that I've recovered enough so that running will do me good from the point of view of strengthening my core muscles).

Tough going at the moment - only getting out on average twice a week for 25mins at a time, but increasing it slowly.

I'm a 24 yr old smoker and since i got with my g/f (about 2yrs ago)
I stopped skateboarding which was my only real exercise outside of work. At work I only lift heavy stuff too so my only exercise is lifting 40-60KG weights all day essentially!

I jogged to the shop the other day though because I was at my girlfriends & didn't want to put my contacts in just to drive there... F*** ME was i buggered.
It's probably not even a mile and I was lightly jogging. I need to start doing something again. I can lift weight no bother and I retain my skater balance which i use to jump over fences and walls whenever an opportunity presents itself.
I just have no stamina and I blame it on smoking (I smoke at least 10 a day since i quit smoking weed about 12-18 months ago)

Kudos for sticking it though is my point i guess. I hope I can, you have made me wanna start jogging/running

I see some joint/jarring posts, but if youre serious about your fitness Id ditch that treadmill and actually run.

Hopping on a moving belt has its benefits but they are inconsiderable when compared to the fitness benefits of actual running. On off season, my fitness gets much worse compared to what it usually is - on the beep test I actually drop 3/4 whole levels. I then do the test twice a week, absolutely giving it my best each time and *always* improving or reaching my previous score. Its a very nice test, tells you exactly how much youve improved and you can compare yourself to real athletes.

5 Years I ran on that damn treadmill. It gave me general fitness I guess, but I see it as time wasted. If you really do suffer from joint pain or weak feet I can advise Asics shoes, the top range ones make you feel like you are running on pillows. Some insoles are also very good. The rower is excellent, as is the elliptical when supplemented with actual running, perhaps on grass or tarmac.

Wow thats very good m8, well done. What are your 10km times and how much improvement do you think you have left in you?

I did a Half-marathon in 1:40ish last year, but I am in a LOT better running shape now. I am doing a full marathon in two weeks, so we will see.

I think I am about topped out as far as my time goes because I am 207 lbs (~94kg with very low body fat), so any time I shave off my miles will be less I can put up on the bench. I am trying to keep the physique in a balance of strength and endurance.

Thats brilliant. Ive ran 10kms before never half/marathons. How tall are you and have you ever done the beep test?

That is awesome man! How much weight have your lost in the process? Have you been measuring your muscle mass in the process?
I have always been one of those people, where I will never run at all, but give me myself time to hydrate and I can run for ever.
I like running, but don't do it that often. I should do it more often. I need too.

6' about even, some people say that I am 6'1", but, I think that is because they are 5'11".

I have no idea what a beep test is.
