So glad I live in the UK.
I hate spiders and would have probably had a heart attack by now if I'd grown up in a place where there were huge ones.

This picture comes to mind.

^^^^^ That picture of the spider above.

I had one that big in my room when I stayed near Byron Bay. Infact it looks like the room where I took photo's of it, but I lost them so I don't think it is. I admit it scared the hell out of me and there was no way I was sleeping in the room with that monster around. I used a whole can of spider killer and it didn't die, I then used a golf club to squash it, but it was so damn big I could feel it pushing back [surrender]

I'm guessing that product wouldn't sell so well in the UK.

That's a huntsman and compared to the one I had in my room 2 years ago that spider there is small. The huntsman in my room was overgrown and was larger then my entire hand. I had to use a drum to get it outside cause I was to afraid to pick it up by it's feet.

Next day I found it in my room again. They are fairly harmless, You can pick them up and it's unlikely they'll bite, I've picked up a few before, but when I saw that one in my room 2 years ago I shat my pants, it was gigantic. Normally they only grow to around 7-8cm across. But this one was more like 15cm+

You sure? Doesn't look it from the pic. But yea, they can grow to crazy lengths. And they can move pretty darn fast too.

I thank spiders for keeping the insect population under control, bless 'em, if i see them in my house i leave them alone, they can catch those dirty damn house flies and other much more disgusting creepy crawlies that would overrun us if it wasn't for them. [thumbup] Yea, birds too, shitting on my car...feckers...

Well Arachnids come pre-programmed to do what they need to.
With us we have instincs and arachnids have all kinds of f@cked up toxins/venoms like snakes our instincs justifyably make us scared of them.
Natures cruel modern humans forget this, if spiders evolved to eat us we would be a meal.

Also have a mango tree in my yard, and also had a spider like that in it. The web was orange, and it was the first time id seen such a spider. Threw rocks at the web and they would just get stuck on the web, it took a quarter brick to take the web down.

Currently hung over though, Golemfrost said he doesnt understand why people are scared of spiders and theres a bloody good reason why people are, then mentioned "you cant choose what your affraid off?" and no sometimes you cant its programmed into us, you may be fine with a large common house spider like me, but to someone else there brain see`s it as a dangerous venomous creature.

Hmm it may be "programmed" into us, but normally our intelligence/knowledge kicks in before something like panic can come up, that way we donīt just run away or scream like mad, but can make a rational decision on whatīs dangerous or not.
In case of Arachnophobia, iīd say thereīs something insane in the brain [rofl]

Actually what usually happens is the person who has Arachnophobia, has had a fear of spiders since early childhood, maybe something really unpleasant happened, and thus as they get older that fear, ( however irrational ), escalates into something that can follow them through their lives, Its probably something they'll never get over.

For me, I had several encounters with what Uk'er's call "garage spiders", i.e. their normally associated with living in outside garages, sheds, etc.

One of my earliest memories is of being about 3 years old and my grandmother had given my mother a homemade picture that was actually a spiders web made from silver thread or cotton and it was made by weaving the thread around a pattern that was made out of small nails in a wooden board in the shape of a spiders web.

To add to the picture she had put a large black plastic spider (about 2 inches across) into the centre of the web, The picture was then hung on a nail on the wall of my bedroom.

At that moment in time, I didn't fear spiders, but that was about to change.

During the night, I awoke and must have got outta bed to go to my mums bedroom, I remember my mother saying that if I went back to bed then she would come and "tuck me in", Anyway, as I was passing the picture in the gloom of the room, I put my finger out to touch the spider in the centre of the web and to my absolute horror the spider ran up my hand and up the sleeve of my pyjamas.

Next thing thats happening, is that I'm standing in the middle of my room with my mum and dad and 3 sisters staring at me as I'm screaming the house down having just $hit my pants.

Various other "encounters" with spiders over the years, left my with a "mortal" fear of them and I've hated them ever since.

However Irrational it may seem to be.
