TBH unless she's using a lot of your utilities - eg showering daily, food, using phone, etc - there is very little you can do in terms of charging rent/bills.

I've been in a similar position - but I didn't really care about the rent/cost element.

I was just annoyed that she occupying my "space".

Every goddamn day, coming home from a long days work, and she was there.
Sitting in the sofa, watching TV.
It just impacted on my freedom - didn't feel completely free to sit in my own living room and watch the channels I wanted and chill.

She'd always bloody cook when I wanted to and spend about 2 hours doing so and use all the pots and pans in the process... which were mine I must add.

Plus the fact that I just generally didn't like the Bitch Queen ***** anyway and everytime I saw her it just p!ssed me off.

Aaahhhhh... happy days.

Fortunately the 2 other flatmates felt the same - so we just sat the guy down and said she had to spend less time there or he could go over to hers instead. Or he'd have to move out at the next tenency renewal.

What's your situation - how many people in your flat?
Do any of you own the house?

Dude you hit the nail on the head. Thats how I feel- its the invasion mixed with his attitude and respect level around the house. Its not the money at all...I just thought that would be an insentive for him to stop acting up this situation to go away.

Yea I own the house and pay the mortgage. I gave him a killer rate $300.00 a month INCLUDING utilities...and then he brings this girl around. If I knew I was getting 2 people then I would have charged more. I gave him a deal cuz I thought it would be just him.

it seems like your roommate and gf are going out of their way to respect your privacy so what's the problem? You should make an effort to get to know her, if she's nice then you may make a friend, if she turns out to be a bitch then you're well within your rights to give her the boot. I shared a studio in college with a mate whose girlfriend was always sleeping over. She was cute and we got along swell so I didn't complain.

You've really got two choices.

Man Up and lay it on the line, get her to pitch in...

or

Speak to the landlord, I'd put money on it that you have a very LARGE say whether she can stay..

I say this because I'll be moving in with my GF very soon, I'll be the third wheel. She doesn't want me paying rent (score) though I told her i'll buy food and pay for any outing.. seems fair

Ha, well if YOU are the landlord... Then, err, your word goes.. Lay the lord man!..

2 people = additional ware... Slap a mandatory additional fee per person... A lot of student apartments do that in the uk

Haha- no we agreed on June 15th...so I am going to write the contract up and give it to him in advance so he knows what hes up against.

If he wants to stay and pay the new rent and except the new guidelines then cool- if not then he can move out, either way I win.

Good way I think. It's your place and he should respect your wishes. You seem like you aren't the kinda guy who wants to get mean about it, which is fine. Means you are a good friend. He can't take advantage of that though.

I don't think I would ever live with my friends; I like them too much.

Living with friends is not a good idea. I wont do it again unless someone cant find anywhere else to go and I have a room available but I will STRESS that it is temporary till they find something else

Yeah, nothing wrong with helping a friend who is down on his/her luck, but as a long term thing its something I won't consider. [no] As fun as it sounds, those kinds of situations never seem to end well.

I let a friend share with me for a year. Let's just say I'm glad it's all over. I got sick of all the rubbish around the house. For a while there he would just stay home all day and watch TV and DVD's with all my home theater equipment while I'll busting my gut to earn these luxuries. He never took out the rubbish bin, and he would never bring it back in you put the rubbish away. He would just stockpile his rubbish until I brought it back in.
We never had any issues with him bringing chicks over. While he did from time to time, it wasn't enough to annoy me.
I would clean all the dishes and the kitchen only to find when I come home from work the pots and pans I want to use are all dirty and I have to wash them AGAIN so I could cook.

It's good it's over as I never spoke anything nice of him, and he's my friend. lol. Now we can just see each other like normal friends do and not annoy each other.

Just an update on the situation...I get a text today:

"Hey I wanted to let you know I moved all my stuff out of the house today"

Honestly after everything I can say that I am happy. I dont plan on renting that room out to anyone else and I am glad that I can have my house to myself for the first time since buying it.

I am in a pretty good mood now [thumbup][thumbup][thumbup]

Fixed it for you.

"Hey I wanted to let you know I moved all of your stuff out of the house today"

Now you can have free open careless sex with your g/f on the couch!

Enjoy the house.

I house shared with two of my best friends last year and after a mere 2 months I was ready to move out. Of course I waited until the tenancy was up after 12 months, but man did I learn alot about living with friends. People you've known for 10-15 years plus, who you'd consider you know extremely well and would get along with always whatever the situation.

I got so angry and p'ed off with constantly having to wash other peoples dishes before cooking my own dinner, untidyness of the living room, unfinished plates of food left on the coffee table, beer cans etc etc. It got the stage where every night I'd have to clear the living room/coffee table of plates/glasses, wash them all up, cook my dinner, eat it, wash up.

They both had girlfriends round 2-3 nights a week (as did I [thumbup]) but mine used to help out with the dishes or clean the kitchen and bathroom, both theirs would hide away in their rooms.

Never again. I'm no killjoy, but people need to show each other respect when in that environment together.
