Default Plane narrowly avoids disaster in high winds
Gotta give the pilot a pat on the back for saving this one...

Saw the video for that on the news this morn. I've gotta say, I would have crapped fifty percent my body weight in that situation.

I think the pilot has earned his/her pension after that. Nice job. I assume the plane landed safely afterwards?

No, it's still up there, patiently waiting for the wing to repaired by a very clever man in a zeppelin.

It cracks me up when I hear people saying "OMG THE PILOT IS A HERO !"

The pilot on that flight made a very poor decision of not going around and diverting to his alternate with such dangerous conditions. He put his passengers' life at risk and should never have gone past the fence.

Very poor airmanship and I wouldn't be surprised if he lost his job over this.

And it cracks me up when people come on here and make comments like that, without knowing the facts. OK, I might be wrong, maybe you were the co-pilot, but I don't think it's clear what the aircraft's situation was, whether it was low on fuel, had an emergency, when exactly it was in trouble, based on that video.

Do you have anything to back up what you said?

This was the weather in Hamburg at the time of the landing. 35 knots gusting to 55 knots. That my friend is insane and seeing how unstable his approach was I have a hard time figuring out how he thought forcing the landing was a good decision. I do not know the crosswind limitation for the A320 but obviously it was more than it could handle.

That's pretty breezy...

I wouldn't call a wing strike followed by a very risky go around with 140+ people on board a "good choice".

Oh well, what do I know about airplanes anyway !

The A320's limit seems to be 33 kts gusting to 38.

I also don't understand why ATC cleared him. They know the weather too and they know the limits. Close the airport and divert all traffic.

The pilot on the other hand should have told ATC that crosswinds were over the limit. He did one hell of a recovery there, but this could have been avoided.
