Default UK - What's a decent Uni?
Only last week i've gone back to finish a Chemistry A level I failed in the previous year due to a very bad teacher, but this time I have a proper teacher that I get on very well with, and doing a single A level alone shouldn't be too difficult as opposed to three. I already have two C grades for A2 Biology and Physics, so I figured if I can achieve a C grade in Chemistry, i'll have around 240 UCAS points.

I won't be solely deciding on what people suggest here, but some idea from past experiences would be helpful as there is alot of choice out there. Ideally, i'd like to go somewhere up north past Nottingham (only within England though), but there's still alot of choice.

Depends quite a lot on what course you're aiming to do but most universities north of Nottingham are pretty good.

Whilst I'm not too hot on good universities, I can tell you to stay COMPLETELY clear on Coventry Uni. I was there for 6 weeks then quit. The place was an absolute joke.

I'll tell you mate - the definition of a absolute joke is Northampton University. Yep, I went there for half a year and hated every moment of it. If i'm going to go to Uni, i'd rather do it properly next time and think about it properly.

Give this a bash: http://education.guardian.co.uk/universityguide2008 for your chosen subject, then see what people think of those universities.

For sure. Hope it goes well for you. The thing with Coventry is the city isn't the worst I've ever been to, and most of the people are nice. But the Uni itself, it's just not that good. I started computer science and was given this excuse for a timetable. It didn't state clearly where you were meant to go, or what lecture it was for. It took over a week for my mate and I to figure out where our classes were. Turned out everyone had the same problem.

I quit and started a job instead, never looked back.

Well i've got Nottingham Trent as an idea, but i'm not sure judging by the score the Guardian give it. How on earth can Northampton University come out on top? I thought it was just crap - full stop.

I seriously need to go some open days.

Staffordshire Uni itself is also OK - depending on the course you want to do of course. I did a BA Joint Hons. Information Systems and Environmental Studies course there. The computing campus (Staffordshire campus itself) is meant to be pretty good, although I never had any of my lectures there.

Well theoretically, I could get in if I achieve the grade I want, but i'm a bit suprised it isn't listed on the guardian rankings.

240 UCAS points! I think the points system must have changed since back when I applied for Uni. Didn't it used to be 10 points for an A grade?

A grade = 120 points
B grade = 100 points
C grade = 80 points
D grade = 60 points
E grade = 40 points

The point value is halved if you achieve that grade in AS.

I'm a Nottingham Trent,

It's not a bad Uni for Computer Science, albiet that I finding it quite a bore. The lecturers can be boring at times as well.

If you wanna do CS, I suggest Manchester University. I heard their CS is good there.

plus manchester is awesome and your close to the peaks / lakes etc

i just had a look at plymouth and the degree sounds good, my friend did computing (at plymouth) and got a job with EA boo hiss and is very happy. From personal experience plymouth is a really great uni/city, we have mild weather and it's fairly safe.

Which one, the full on Manchester Uni or Manchester Metropolitan?

The Manchester Uni requires three A grades at A levels, which is impossible. The Metropolitan requires at least 240 ucas points, so three C grades would be sufficient.

The University of Plymouth also have the 240 point requirement.

You don't always need the specified amount of points/grades.

My course wanted 240points which is 3 C's, I got in with 3 D's. It depends on demand really. If it's a high demand course then they'll look at your grades, if it's not so high demand they'll probably be more lenient on their decision.

And Trent really isn't a bad Uni. It's just the people there. lol. They're so adament on getting drunk and going out EVERY single day. It's ridiculous.

One of the guys I know is out every day. No joke. And he told me he doesn't wanna go in debt. Pfft.

I can understand getting pissed - when I go to Uni, I certainly want to try and go out as much as possible. Only problem i've got however, is my car, which is on a hire purchase agreement. Around December time, I can hand the car back without any loss, and i'm rather tempted to as i'd rather drive some older banger than this car i'm driving now, which I don't even like, and it's too much of a liability every month just because of the loan.

2005 Vauxhall Corsa by the way.

I do understand where most people are coming from when they like to get drunk at Uni. Most likely the reason being is they're restricted to such activities when they're at home.

But even so, I don't know how anyone can go out so much. Call me a boring old fart but I actually don't like going out clubbing anymore. I've had 2 drinks since Christmas, which was the other night.

Even so, I think the reason for The Guardian's information is because most of the students here get drunk/pissed to be doing their course.
