Default Alcoholic drinks...what/why makes you feel a certain way?
As I type this I have about 3/4 bottle of red wine in me....and I am wondering why I feel so damn happy. This is a pretty common effect for my consumption of red wine, a relaxed sense of well being.

Beer makes me a bit sleepy and sluggish.

And we all know people that "tequila makes them crazy"....

Basically I wonder why....why do different drinks tend to make a person feel different way when the "active" ingredient is alcohol?

A few things like sugar and carb content make some sense but I have noticed it even with shots...

Anyone else feel so different? Any ideas why?

Wine is good!

I really enjoy my beer, but appreciate wine more. Every varietal and bottle is unique. The same can be said for beer, but its plainly and simply not as elegant or sophisticated.

Sophisticated!

Me? Hardly, but I do know what I like and have tasted my share of both, from low end to high end.

Anyways.. yes I like the nice warm, not full feeling, that wine brings. Even more with the right atmosphere, setting, or mood.

its all in your head dude...alcohol is alcohol. You likely drink red wine when you are in a certain mood, since you already are in that certain mood, the alcohol in the wine only reinforces that mood. Same with beer....most people drink beer right after work when they are already somewhat sluggish...or say in front of the TV watching football on a sunday... when a nap is very likely, beer or no. There is not some magical concoction in tequila that makes people go crazy, it is just that tequila shots are as popular as margaritas (which in and of themselves can be quite strong)... people get peer pressured into doing a couple of shots over a short time while they also have a margarita in thier hand, things can get outta hand pretty fast.

Well logically I would agree with you but experience says otherwise. Really why I bothered to even create a thread.

I mean tonight I was really in the mood for a beer with my meal...but I was out of my favorite (Alaskan Amber) and we had a red wine, so I went that direction. I honestly feel different with different alcoholic drinks, and odd thing is, while I agree your mood going in makes a huge difference, I have experienced some real contradications to that hypothesis as well. I can explain beer pretty well do to higher volume and carb content, but others make no sense.

Almost all alcohol makes me feel like crap, probably because I think it's disgusting. Doesn't that support the "predisposition" hypothesis? [rofl]

But really, there might be some biochemical mechanism behind what you're experiencing, but I don't think alcohol has any control over the hormonal release that gives you the "happy" feeling. Perhaps it's something else in the wine?

Dunno mate. I act differently whenever I go drinking, it all depends on your mood I suppose. I might get tipsy/drunk from beer and be a loud mouth, next time I drink the exact same beer and get tipsy/drunk I will act perfectly normal (with a little staggering problem). Do it again another time and I might be in a happy mood and tell jokes and laugh at things you probably normally wouldn't laugh at.

And its like this with all other alcohols I drink. Though sometimes I get fairly painful shoulders when I go a bit into the tipsy stage, but wears off once I'm in the drunken stage.

I have a bottle of wine with me, apparently its an expensive wine and my Nan didn't know and just gave it to me cause she thought it was cheap crap. My mate says I should start drinking a glass a night when I start TAFE as it relaxes you. But the only wine I've tasted was cheap crap and it made a funny feeling in the back of my neck when drinking it.

Unlike man, all Alcohols are not created equal and there for.. all alcohols are not equal. Alcohol in and of its self is equal, but nobody drinks pure alcohol.

the only real differences are alcohol contents. Alcohol passes strait through your stomach lining into your blood...so carbs and such is meaningless. This might end up being a longish post but i will do my best to explain why alcohol content is the only mitigating factor.

In general

1 shot = single sized mix drink = 12 ounces beer = 4-5 ounces of wine

People will often become sluggish/tired while drinking beer because you have to be continuously drinking beer to stay ahead of an early hangover, and over an extended period of time, the volume of beer needed to keep the buzz is outweighed by the bloatedness/hours spent drinking said beer....basically, you just get physically tired of drinking beer.

Wine is often eaten with food...even so, the much higher alcohol content helps to keep a person at a steady buzz on much less drinking. I would say that personally, for me, wine is the perfect drink, as just my normal rate of drinking it, keeps me on an even buzz, that is unlikely to veer beyond of below buzzness without a concerted effort.

Mixed drinks are similar to wine...except that when you are making them yourself, the more drinks you make the stronger they get. In general... at a bar where each single is evenly poured, i will have a similar experience to wine... when i make them myself i suffer from the stronger and stronger drink phenomena i spoke of earlier.

Shots: really, whisky/tequila/rum/vodka/gin ...all 80 proof (in general) all same alcohol effect... only difference between them is your ability to stomach them... some people can drink a whole bottle of tequila and the meer smell of whisky will make them gag... so people ability to handle shots is more based on thier pallette instead of effect of said shot vs another.

I can say with 150% confidence that different liquors have the exact same effect as one another. I used to drink a lot of tequila in college, and when I was drunk on it, I was still a shy, quiet introvert (just like I always am).[surrender] No damn difference at all.

alcohol is alcohol,..
Beer is a bit different though.
Being made of Hop, it contains methylbutenol which has a very mild sedative effect.
pretty much the reason why itīs also used in various sleep medications.

Beer = Makes me feel like a working class man, not a snob. More true blue Aussie. A drink for every guy.

Spirits = I feel a little more complex, a bit more manly at the same time.

Wine = At my age most people don't drink wine, but I've been brought up on it and know a fair bit on it. Once again feel more complex... and drunk, ahahaha weeeeeeee. I can socialise with older men and women with this drink.

Girly drinks (eg vodka cruiser) = I feel like a girly man. Not something I enjoy.

Any type of booze makes me feel normal. I like feeling normal. If only I was allowed to drink when I was living with my dad and step mom at the age of 15. I think things would have been a lot easier in my daily life

I anyone here a doctor, or a scientists who studis this? Or is it all just experince and opinions?

I will disagree with the half that says alcohol is alcohol (based on personal experience of course.) Get a cheap bottle of mezcal (the wanna be tekillya with the worm in it) and yes it will get you drunk, but the crap is so dirty it's almost gureenteed to make you wake up with a hang over. I think the only way you can say alcohol is alcohol is with comparing diesel (the alcohol, not the fuel) with everclear. Basically the same stuff. Comparing whiskeys, like say a Bourbon to an Irish whiskey is pretty dumb. DIfferent chemical properties just based on the water it was created with. Unless someone shows some scientific proof that this alcoholic beverage is the same as this one, I'm going to tend to agree with the people who say different drinks make you feel different. You have your corn-based, potatoe, rice, sour mash, wheat, rye, suger, agave, and so on... They only thing they have in common is they all contain ethonal, which creates formic acid. Other then that they all have other, different chemical properties.
