I have a D-Link DIR-625 PreN wireless router connected to my cable connection and setup as my main access point for the network. I also have a NetGear WGP S606, this is upstairs and is a wireless b/g print server with four 10/100 ports to connect to an existing network or wired computers. It says it can share the two USB printers between multiple computers in a wired and wireless environment.
Now, I have it set in bridge mode right now and have it linked with the D-Link downstairs. I have this for one main reason, the computer upstairs does not have a wireless card and wants to share the network, it also wants the option of either a hard or soft way to disconnect from the always on cable internet connection, super paranoid, I know. Anyway, this allows the computer upstairs to disable the network connection and be disconnected from the internet or even just pull the plug from the back of the NetGear Print Server if it wants a super for sure I’m totally disconnected and can’t be hacked solution. Now here’s my question, when a router is in bridged mode, can it also repeat the signal out so other computers could pick it up and connect to the network. I would love to be able to connect to this device with my iPhone when I get it or a notebook since it’s upstairs and thus has much greater range (I get about 30% signal when in the living room yet would probably get 80 to 90% if connecting to the device upstairs.) I figure my signal will either be very low, below 10%, or nothing outside in the backyard and really would like to have internet out there but don’t want to spend another $100 or more on a “range extender” that would probably be placed in the computer room upstairs (NEXT to the NetGear) and STILL would only produce extended b/g range. Does anyone know if this is physically possible with a bridged connection and then does anyone know if the hardware I have can be setup to do this? If not, does anyone know of a PreN range extender or full fledged access point that can be bridged to connect to my D-Link downstairs? I really don’t feel like spending more money on yet a third device but if I can’t do it with this hardware I MIGHT if I can find one that would give me N speeds between files on my computers and such, just I haven’t seen anything on the market that can do this! |

i believe bridge mode is only for bridging.
my netgear access points have 3 different settings: point to point bridge point to multipoint bridge and repeater. fromt he explanantions in the setup bridging will just connect it to each other. i do believe though that i was actually able to connect still. not quite sure. there are linksys range extenders which you might plug into a wall plug directly. no other cabling needed. i am actually looking at one of those |
