So maybe it's my pattern? I only shave twice a week (because it sucks) after letting the hairs grow to 2-4mm. Should I do it... more often?

Ok, but it better work. If all it does is give me more frequent razor burn, I'm gonna be mad.

lol, glad I'm not the only one. The only problem is that I can grow a beard and I can grow sideburns, but they'll never meet. There's a tiny gap between them, and I end up getting shaft-like side burns. Not cool...

Just shave against the grain. I know people always tell you not to but honestly I cannot get a close shave unless I do it.

Electric shavers give you razor burn? How can that happen?
I get terrible razor burn from electric shavers and not nearly as close as a shave. Thats personally why I dont bother with them.

I DO shave against the grain... I think that's what causes most of the problems.

I always wondered why. Why shouldnt you shave against the grain? Just like you, I cant get a clean shave without shaving against the grain. And since I work in a firm where appearance is important, I have to make it a good clean shave.

You're at risk of in-growing hairs if you shave against the grain.

Personally, Unless I'm going out anywhere, I only shave once or twice a week.

I always have a shave in the bath, so that my hairs have had a good soak.
I also remember years ago, a friend told me that if whilst washing my hair, I washed my face at the same time with shampoo, the shampoo would soften my neck hairs or beard and make them easier to shave.
So I've always done that and never had a problem since, and I'm quite prone to razor burn.

I also shave once in line with my hairs, then relather my face and shave "against the grain".

It might take twice as long, but it ensures a shave that lasts for at least 3 days.

I also use Nivea shaving balm, which helps to keep my skin from developing a rash after shaving.

That's what i do too, but mostly because i don't want to make a mess on the sink. And i shave once weekly regardless.

Fuzion + Fuzion gel + shave upward instead of down. Thats how I do it myself. Gives me a clean shave with no irritation.

I thought you were supposto on the neck. (shave up)

But... I remember when shaving was cool. Back in early high school. Now its just a pain in the arse. [thumbdown] I do mine in the shower. Bic something or other razor and Gilette gel. Then after im done I use Neutrogenia face wash.

I also had/have awful time with rasor burn and in grown hair.

I tried everything but so far the best that has worked for me is:

1. Shave after having a shower

2. Shave often, but not too often. I she once in two days.

3. Got me a Philipshave Coolskin. It's water resist. You can use it in the shower but it sucks coz I can't see anything because of the steam. Though it's very good when I use shaving foam.

4. I found out that using a menthol shaving foam eleminates razor burn. I use nivea energy.

5. Go very slowly with the electric razor. I get much better results by going slowly than several fast runs on the same area.

6. I apply the shaving foam twice. That is, apply shaving foam, shave, rinse, apply shaving foam, shave, rinse.

7. Then use nivea balsam aftershave.

This takes me around 10 minutes, but at least it does look half as bad as it used to be.

Holy heck, 10 minutes? It takes me 15-20 minutes to get everything off just using the razor alone!

Since I do it in the shower, I rinse it off after each pass. Try that?

my advice that has worked great for my straight caucasian hair:

1) always after a hot shower. I don't even dry my face before shaving or it is painful
2) shave with the grain first, then against for a clean finish
3) always spread the cream with some extra hot water (I think shaving gels are inferior)
Optional: use moisturizer while face is still soft to keep it that way

I usually complete my shave in 2-3 minutes since safety razors can shave very fast if you keep them wet and lubricated.

I had the exact same problem mate.... and you know what I found works... try shaving just after a shower, when the skin still hold a bit of moisture... that was the skin won't dry up, flake and bleed.
.
That's how I still shave this day, right after a warm shower.
Works perfect!

But my electric seems to clog up and slow down when I get it wet...
