82%
Wrong.

Harvard Admissions Info

Out of state students: 85% So only 15% are in-state... what percentage of that are actually from Boston? Really, I bet maybe a few percent at most of Harvard students are actually from Boston.

Did you ever take a person less seriously because of their accent?
People do that to me all the time.

American Standard, the accent of news anchors, originates in Nebraska.
Interesting that you say that. When I worked for a major insurance company Omaha Nebraska was the king of cities for telemarketing centers because the accent was so neutral it wouldn't offend your customer base. All our primary call centers were in the midwest for that reason (and to be in the center of the timezones.) Salt lake city was also good in terms of accents and the Mormons provided a good consistent work force. We had emergency call centers in all parts of the country except the south (because of the accent)

Anyway, Asher, you're prejudiced as usual.
Not prejudiced. Just efficient.

Yes. Years ago I was flipping channels on TV & landed on a Nova science program where a fellow with a deep south US accent was talking about string theory. I could not take him seriously. I kept thinking he'd start tohkin bout grits.

I think he means that if he avoids them he saves time.
It's like when I have to do conference call with our out sourcing companies in India. A lot of time is wasted due to lousy communications. We have a much easier time face to face where body language and watching lips facilitates better communications.

Are you saying Mid-Atlantic accents are unintelligible? I highly doubt that, jokes about Rocky's muttering aside.

What do you mean efficient? How is prejudice against people with Mid-Atlantic accents efficient?
Because those people are not worth my time, of course. When I hear them talk, I know right away to save my time and move on.

Same deal when encountering someone wearing an AC/DC shirt or a Che Guevera shirt.

You just said NYers sound the same way but you've learned that they can be smart because you have met investment bankers with that accent.

How many times do I have to get through your thick skull that as soon as you know some smart people with Philly or Jersey or Baltimore or whatever else accents that you'll reconfigure your views just as you did about NYers?

And it's mind boggling to me how a Philly accent could sound retarded. You described it as ghetto gangster but apparently you don't know what that means because white people in Philly have the strongest Philly accents of all.

There ARE no smart people in Philly.

And it's mind boggling to me how a Philly accent could sound retarded. I rest my case.

I usuAlly take-ah people speaking with Italian accent-ah less-ah seriously. They-ah sound-ah ridiculous.

I don't take Provost Harrison seriously. Not sure the accent is to blame though.
I like the element of surprise it gives me

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that all the people up in that area speak like that. I did note a correlation with those who felt there 'ivy league' education was worth more than a fiddlers fart.

Slow talking yokels down south
Southerners do not talk slower than people from other regions of the United States. Another southern myth
