Ever had one of those shots where you, often unintentionally, just tear the cover off the ball, far exceeding your expected distances? Tell us about it. How did it end up?
Hit a crappy drive into a bunker on the first hole, which is a severely uphill dogleging par 5. Duff my bunker shot, and end up with almost 280 to the hole. I pull a 3 wood, expecting to get it 200 yards or so. I put a good swing on it, and I could tell it was gone. The ball had a baby draw, avoided 3 tree limbs. and ended up about 20 yards from the hole. I was slackjawed. |

A couple of weeks ago... I was 266 from the center of the green on a par 5 with my 2nd shot coming up. Normally I would lay up to 90 or so but that day I went against my better judgement and said I would just try to get it as close as possible. A nice smooth 5-wood; carried about 230 and rolled the rest of the way up onto the green. Pin high, putting for eagle. I have never hit a 5-wood that far before or since.
BTW, missed the eagle, got the bird. |

The 10th hole at my home course is a true "green light" hole and I love to boom it off that tee.
So far my longest off the tenth this year (as of this afternoon) is 311 yds., and no matter what kind of round I'm having, I can't wait to get to that hole because there's no such thing as swinging too hard and man does it feel good! |

Last Wednesday I pulled me tee shot on a short dogleg left par 4 a bit and was in the left rough. I was laying at 166 and there was a tree blocking my path to the green. My natural shot is a draw but i needed to hit a fairly big hook to get it on the green. I took out my 8 iron and aimed about 25 yards right of the green and just drilled it. It hooked around perfectly and was headed for the right side of the green and it flew the green by about 10 yards. I was shocked that the hook which normally adds a little distance added that much.

Last year I teed off with a 5i on a short 260 yd par 4 that I figured would leave me with a wedge to the green. My driver had put me in jail behind tons of trees the last two holes, so I figured I'd lay up on this one instead of goin for it. The hole has a water trough right in the middle at 210, so I figured "no way I can reach that with my 5i, so I'll hit hard 5 right at it , only hit my 5i 170 on average. You can probably guess the rest, the ball flew almost to the water trough, maybe ten yds short of it, landed dead with no hop, and then just trickled down and came to rest just a few inches into the water. Ridiculous!

I smoked a recovery shot on my 5th hole on Sunday afternoon. I hit an infield fly off the tee that barely cleared the forward tee boxes. Of course, it's the longest Par 4 on the front side, so I probably had a minimum of 280-300 left. There was a tree in my line if I went directly toward the green, so I hit my hybrid to the far left side of the fairway. I knew I hit it well, so I was really frustrated when I couldn't find my ball at first. I thought it might have gone too far off the fairway and hit some of the burned out rough and went OB. To my delight, as I was circling the cart back around I saw the ball sitting in the rough about 20 yards short of the green. No doubt I got a fortunate bounce and some drought-aided roll, but I happily accepted my good fortune. Of course, I ended up hitting a mediocre pitch and two putted for a bogey. At least it wasn't a double.

I used to be a long driver. 285 - 325, lots of longest drive prizes. Stopped swinging for the fences 10 years ago. Now I average 260 of the tee. Few weeks ago I played in a charity golf outing at the Country Club I caddied at as a teen. The other 3 guys in my foursome hit bad drives, I hit last. 320 right down the middle. Last real long drive of the season so far. I was trying to keep it in the middle and not crank it up.
BTW, hit a 4i on the green and 3 putted for a bogey. For me, the key to smoking it is to stay in my swing plane and relax. |

One time in a high school match I was sitting 150 out on the last hole. I knew the match was up to me, and I had the ball right where I wanted it. At this time, this was my 9 iron, which I'm pretty good with. I pull it from the bag and take my swing. As soon as I hit it, I knew I had hit it good. It was heading straight for the flag, and then flew about 25 yards over into the water on the fly! I couldn't believe what had just happened. Heck of a shot, but ended badly in this situation.
