Dale Earnhardt, Jr wrecked his Daytona 500 pole-qualifying car today in practice. While pushing Jimmie Johnson during practice, Johnson bobbled and a couple cars who were fast approaching got into him when he checked up, sending him into the inside wall.

Dale Junior will now be forced to surrender his #1 spot for Sunday's race due to having to go to a backup car...which will be his 3rd in the last couple weeks due to his crash during the Shootout.

Tough week for Junior.
He still gets to keep his choice in pit lane.

They said that now the winner of the duels gets the first spot. What happens if that is Dale by some odd chance?

I would laugh my ass off at all the Junior haters and the conspiracy theorists as I watch them lose their ever lovin' minds. The star cluster would fly high in the sky on that one.

Impressive performance from Bayne, he struggled with JG before the first caution but showed that he was a very quick learner.

Heard some initial chatter that Jeff might have to go to a backup car after that little dustup on the last lap, haven't heard any future developments

It's likely. The aero is going to be off on that car and it's definitely better to bring out a fresh one.

Gordon not going with the backup car. Sweet.

Brian Kes is a great story, I'd love to see him have a great finish.

Meh. He'd be NO story if his brother didn't shove him into the race.

Last 10 laps of the Nationwide race were fucking sick.

Let's hope for something close to that tomorrow.

Not exactly a lot of racin' going on here, so far. At least the Flyers are up 3-1 over the Rangers on NBC on Hockey day in America - whatever that is.

Anyone rooting for Jr. to win just because it's been 10 years since Sr. died? The girl bartender at the golf course is.

I took a bet for the year, I've got Stewart and Kyle Busch against Johnson and Hamlin.

Because someone else would have got there without a push? WTH are you even talking about?

He took an unsponsored 4 year old car with a 4 year old motor and got into the Daytona 500. I think that's pretty impressive.

So what do you all think about this Noah's Ark racing? Whatever happened to 2-3 lines of 5-6 car trains?

This race has been nothing but a gi-normous clusterfu*k.

There've been more flags displayed than on a naval vessel.

I think a lot of people were crying after that giant wreck.

I enjoyed this finish the most since DJ won in 1993. God bless that kid. I'm so happy for him I have tears in my eyes.

He did everything right. His car is clean.

Plus I'm real happy for the Wood Brothers, they've been in this sport forever and haven't done well for a long time.

Great 500.

Ok, this made me cry. Not much makes me cry.

Brian's Song made me cry. Old Yeller made me cry.

Ned Jarrett's call of the 1993 Daytona 500 made me cry
As the leaders exited Turn 2, the CBS Sports producers came on the headsets of Ken Squier, Neil Bonnett, and Ned Jarrett, telling Ned to "call his son home". Quote: "Come on, Dale! Go, buddy, go! Allright, come on! I know he's got it to the floorboard; he can't do anymore! Come on! Take 'er to the inside! Don't let 'em get on the inside of you comin' around this turn! Here he comes, Earnhardt; it's the "Dale and Dale Show" as we come off Turn 4! You know who I'm pulling for, it's Dale Jarrett. Bring her to the inside, Dale! Don't let him get down there! He's gonna make it! Dale Jarrett's gonna win the Daytona 500!!!"
The next weekend at Rockingham, Ned reportedly apologized to Earnhardt for his obvious show of bias, to which an understanding Earnhardt replied, "I'm a daddy too." Earnhardt's death.

9-11-2001

And this race.
