Default Quick tech prediction...
....two years from now an iPad + apple TV will have at least 30% of the console market.

I tried real racing 2 HD through my mates apple TV and it's awesome. The iPad is the controller, and also the telemetry / readouts device and the graphics are pin sharp and fluid on a 50" HDTV.

Before you start being a hater, look at where the next wii is going and tell me you can't see Apple with the same kind of roadmap. Plus full access to the app store and iOS it's a no-brainer.

May I ask how long you played the game?

I have no doubt at all you wouldn't like holding up an iPad for full on gaming sessions lasting more than 30 minutes. Your shoulder's would begin to tire after a while unless you have some kind of support for your elbows.

I'd love to see someone try to make an ergonomic "controller" case for an iPad.

Just my .02...

I've played it for over an hour just using the iPad and don't have any problems. You sit down and balance your arms on your stomach for the best play. Although I don't doubt an iPad games controller will come out.

Could you use an iPhone, or iPod touch? I could see that being competitive.

I don't see why not in a few versions time. Not sure they have the horsepower to output onto HDTV yet?

I thought the Apple TV was the one that needed the HP.

Currently iOS 5 is needed for mirroring the iPad's display.

I have played Real Racing HD 2 at home a few time with my iPad connected to the TV and it is pretty impressive that it is running at full 1080p. The poly count isn't all that high but the sensation of playing a game on a device the thickness of a magazine with the visuals it produces is pretty cool.

If the iPhone 5 has the A5 (which it probably will) I can see the combination of it and Apple TV being quite impressive. I use my Apple TVs many times during the week, whether it be for streaming music when I walk in the door and do things around the house or chilling with friends and we pass the iPad around to push videos and music to them. Plus with them being $99, I installed one in the main room and the bedroom so I can push my media everywhere.

So the Apple TV doesn't power it? Are they working in parallel?

For Real Racing 2 it is simply just taking the video feed from the iPad 2 and it is doing all of the processing power as you can connect an iPad via HDMI to the TV.

The Apple TV will do stuff like stream media from the web, a computer, etc. but in this specific case, it is just being fed video.

OK, it's got an A4 processor though, I would imagine they could tweak it up and allow people to use iPhones and iPods to control it. Could you imagine the market the could get with that? Hell, I'd buy one, makes my iPod touch useful again!

iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads can already control it it fully as well as stream music, video, and images to it. You must be specifically saying in a game related manner.

That's what I mean, if I could buy and Apple TV, and use the iPod as a controller for HD games being run on the TV, whoa... awesome.

We will have to see what happens in the fall when iOS 5 hits the handhelds and the Apple TV. I know people have already found clues that the update will support BT peripherals on the Apple TV so maybe they will open up an App Store and have games that interfaces with multiple devices.

My only problem with the Apple TV is that it doesn't support mkv.

I think Apple and Nintendo have the better idea, rather than MS, Sony and there motion control.

Personally I'm not keen on motion stuff (even on my iPod for the most part), so I hope not, although I haven't tried the iPad with game you mentioned so who knows maybe I'd like it but I doubt it..

I was thinking you could also use the iPad as a touchscreen controller. But they may well release a joypad for it.
