My only problem with the Apple TV is that it doesn't support mkv.
You and most people around the world.

How can you a it a media device if it doesn't support the most popular video container format out there.

I use a regular HTPC with XMBC, there isn't anything better.

Yep, but they don't have the gaming infrastructure of iOS I don't think.

then i guess it's safe to say that the next generation of gaming systems will be heavily dependent on the infrastructure / means of distribution / community.

The rise of the indie games have been somewhat startling these past few years to say the least, for sure that fact would be a major driving force in how the gaming scene will be molded in the next few years.

As of the moment, the only thing i dread about games on the iOS is that although there are a lot of respectable/good/ or even great games, i can't shake off the feeling that most it are novelty.

I don't understand how what you're doing is any different from what almost any other tablet or smartphone can do... I mean, is there something special that's going on here that I'm missing or are you just plugging an HDMI cable into your tablet? I can't imagine why you'd be under the impression that this is revolutionary.

With iOS 5 and Apple TV you can do it untethered, which is nice since you can relax on your couch and enjoy steaming wirelessly, games included. Once iOS 5 comes out, I foresee a lot of games allowing 1080P streaming, allowing for a console-like experience from your iphone or iPad. Think Wii U but about a year earlier.

It actually does this all wirelessly. The iPad compresses the video, sends to the Apple TV over wifi, which then decodes it and displays it on your TV. It does this all close enough to realtime that you can use it for gaming. I suspect Apple are doing something interesting with the iPad 2's GPU because having the older gen Apple iDevices stream just audio results in a second or two delay.

Pirate.
Why not use the best video container available when you can easily do so?

what I would like to see is the iPad 2 have a button that you press and out pops a flat SNES type controller using BT. That would be nice.

2 years no. A decade, maybe.

I want iPad2 and Tegra 2 hardware inside something like the Apple TV or WD TV Live with console capabilities. Charge like ~$130 I think that they could do pretty well. Basically take over the HTPC market. 1080p, apps, apps, more apps, games, web browser, etc. Homebrew would have a hay day with an Android based device.

Tegra 3 looks awesome and quad core processors are coming out later this year and early next year. GPU inside the iPad2 is designed to easily expand.

A decade? The world a decade from now is unfathomable.

Think about the state of gaming in now, in 2011, compare that to 2001, compare that to 1991, then compare that to 1981.

If the DM's prediction does not come true in the next few years, it will be forgotten for much better technologies.

Why would you want to limit it to your apple TV when you can take your tablet everywhere?

My point is that the iPad is basically a wii console / controller in a box and look how successful the wii is. Plus Apple can sell good games cheaply on the app store.

On top of that you also have an internet enabled tablet computer with you at all times.

99% of all pirated movie files are mkv. No subscription service that I know of puts it in that container, unless of course you are downloaded movies via bit torrent. I honestly couldn't care less, but it is what it is.

I have the nasty habit of backing up my BluRays to my external HD so I can bring my entire collection with me wherever I go. Frankly sir, your baseless allegations have impugned my reputation on these boards. I find it only fair for you to correct such an egregious error by purchasing me the Witcher 2. A meager sentence when compared to the irreparable harm you have caused my good name. Until then I say GOOD DAY SIR.

Eh? Every film I download is an AVI pretty much. The only time I have seen MKV is a couple of TV series I downloaded.

A vast majority of HD shows and movies, particularly BD movies that are ripped, they cut the bitrate in half if not more and fallback to the lossy audio.

There are certainly people that use the container for legitimate purposes but there are also pleeeenty of examples where it is not used in such a fashion.

My point is that the iPad is basically a wii console / controller in a box and look how successful the wii is. Plus Apple can sell good games cheaply on the app store.

On top of that you also have an internet enabled tablet computer with you at all times.
Then that wouldn't be a console or even a handheld. Still just a tablet in the end. Plugging in your tablet into the TV isn't going to fly well for gamers when you'll just use the tablet screen. PSP has been able to do this, but how often do people do it? Im sure never. They just game on their little 4" screen instead.
Plus you also have to worry about battery life of the thing for gamers who wanna chill on the couch for hours on end.

Wii U is a little different because the Wii U renders the image, but then sends the data to the tablet controller. The tablet is basically a wireless monitor/controller.
Then for multiplaying at home everyone needs to have the tablet w/ app.

Its going to be hard to say that the iPad is going to be 30% of console sales, when first you have to make it into a console.
