Most of the time I think of "hand built" and "you can only afford the maintenance if you're loaded" as qualifications of a true supercar.

The Corvette is too reliable. Most supercars you have to replace the clutch with an oil change. The McClaren engine only gets something like 15,000 miles before it needs to be replaced.

A Supercar to me is a car that is completely unpractical for day to day usage, and has a look about it, that makes people who know nothing about cars just stop and stare. they know its something special , but dont know why?

It obviously has to be quicker than you could ever need it to be, and is beyond the means of the general public.

I think the problem nowadays , with setting a standard for a supercar, is not the car itself , but the fact that the market has been flooded with high performance cars, 500bhp is no longer the preserve of exotica, you can get that in a BMW or Merc FFS.. so by saying its this quick/this pwerful etc does not hold true anymore..

To me , a Supercar is a car , I would prob never afford to buy, or even run, and tugs my heart strings, and not be something I woul dbuy, if I was using my brain!

A Z06 is a supercar for most of the areas that count IMO.

Why it isn't:

it is basically a good sports car base, with factory mods. The base car is FAR too common.

Price and exclusivity are missing.

Two things that are very much needed to be considered a supercar...exclusivity and the base car is still considered a super car.

That is why I think a Z06 is not a supercar but a Ford GT is...you can't buy a lesser version of the GT...even if the GT is about the same league performance wise.

Bottom line...no amount of mods, factory or not can make a non super car...super.

I couldn't agree more, its all about class.

Some cars have it, some don't.

AFAIK there are three amercian supercars. Ford-Shelby GT40, Corvette Z-06 and Dodge Viper. I think the only real criteria is performance and design. Though I could not easily define at what point a car becomes a super car. I think it is just obvious.

Design or 'class' is a factor and the corvette z 06 though there is a base model if you look at it, it is georgeous it clearly was not designed to be a normal car. It was designed to make a certain statment. I think corvette had to relase a base model of its super car (not the other way around) because of corvettes strong working class blue collar roots. the corvette is the blue car american working mans dream car; it is an icon. They could not alienate their key demograph.

I would love to use them for everyday driving. Fun everyday. =D I love both those cars, the Cat. a little more.
I would too, but there are alot of points that just doesn't make them practical to drive everyday. They miss luxuries you find in everyday cars; not many seats; very small boot space... etc.

As a second car to use for fun driving, i'd love one. Maybe for the price of a corvette, i'd buy a kit car or something with a decent saloon car as well. Would be a great combination.

I'd agree with the Ford GT as a Supercar, but not the Z06, or Viper

The Z06 looks like a regular corvette . therefore not real exotica, and the Dodge Viper has a Truck Engine... and far too common..

The current Viper engine may have been derived from a V10 truck engine but its current incarnation is PURE race engine. Everything in that motor has been redesigned for track use. Then they stuck it in a truck. Compare the original V10 the viper was built with to what it is now and you'll see quite a difference in design, and the materials used to build them.

As for the Corvette Z06 and the Viper being supercars I don't think they qualify on the basis that they do not offer the exclusivity that a Super Car buyer would want. Someone who wants a Super Car wouldn't want to see another car like his. That would make the car less "special"

However, given the money to buy a "super car" or a blue collar demon like the Z06 or the Viper then I'd definitley order One Competition Orange C6 Z06 + a lingenfelter Z06 package for 1,000hp+

There are significant changes... Its not a "truck engine," based off, and changed, yes.

Well, you're right in the sense that a Ferrari was based off a Model T because they both have 4 wheels, a steering mechanism, and run on combustable fuel... The engine in the Viper is in no way a truck engine.

The Z06 is close...but not quite...for the reasons I stated before...same with Viper.

It is not performance, it is exclusivity.

Just because I can throw mods on my car and make it get around a track as fast as a "real" supercar...doesn;t mean it is one.

No, supercharged petrol.
I don't know if it would destroy it though! Destroy it in what, a straight line? Fuel consumption? Looks? They're all relative.
