Sounds like some decent piloting there. A water landing is never easy; seeing that everyone made it just fine, I know he did a good job. [thumbup]

Indeed, great reaction and handling of the situation.

I looked up "bird strikes" and never knew they could be sooooo dangerous or damaging to a plane. Quite amazing really.

Here in Portugal, the first thing they said "It's been confirmed that it's not terrorism related!"
Geez! enough with the terrorism propaganda.
A car looses a wheel on the highway, "It's confirmed! It's not terrorism"
Terrorism propaganda really hurts middle easterns living in the US.

Wow it's painful watching the CNN coverage. The same questions over and over again. And how about the mayor's news conference, a journalist asked if it was a terrorist attack despite it being made clear multiple times not to be [rolleyes]

Professional performance by the flight crew, ferry and rescue crews.

They should give that pilot the HIGHEST civilian award he can possibly receive.
His PRECISE actions saved 155 people. Doesn't get more heroic than that.
And you can't possibly land a plane on water better than what he did...

I was an engineer for Pratt and Whitney a couple of years ago and saw, first-hand, the testing facilities for the engines.

I will tell you this, the engines on that plane were NOT P&W, they were either GE or MDs. Jokesters in the test lab threw in watermelons, coins (even a chair once) into the running engines and those turbines tore that **** up. There actually coins stuck in the wall 50 feet behind the exhaust.

Of course, the engines I am talking about were probably military F119s... not commercial like the engines on the A320.

Yes, having performed dozens yourself it's understandable the amount of skill involved. [rofl]

j/k dude... it's just the way you said it, made it sound like you thought you were a seasoned pilot or something taking from experience.

Couldn't agree any more. He deserves all the praise he can get.

I am glad this story has a happy ending.

Well, I do have SOME flight experience.. [thumbup]

As odd as it sounds, I was qualified to fly solo before I was licenced to drive; I first flew a Schweizer SGS 2-33, and later flew a LET L-23. Thankfully, I have never landed on water, though the ground school classes gave a good impression of how hard it is. Though I can say that landing with only one main wheel and no engine is certainly no field trip either..

And if you were wondering, I ran out of money before I could get a full pilots license.. Something I hope to still correct later in life. Though, interestingly enough, my student license was signed and given to me by a man whose first license was signed by Orville Wright (Al Santilli).

Who was the co-pilot?

I ask because the procedure is for the captain to manage the emergency situation while the co-pilot flies the plane. Some kudos should also go to the co-pilot.

Water landing is had to keep the plane in one piece since as soon as the engines hit the water it can rip the wings off and plunge the plane into the water due to the massive amounts of drag.

All I can say is full respect for the pilot!

His actions saved hundreds of lives; I'd say that makes him a hero. You can't just say he was "just doing his job", these were extraordinary circumstances.

Well doesn´t that make every doctor/surgeon a Hero too ?
They save thousands of lives each year.

Sry to me a Hero is something else.
