Default crippen nearly got killed yesterday !!!
let me explain.
me and my nephew were taking the dogs a walk and we used the old pit lane to get access to the forest. on this lane there are very few houses and it"s easy to see if any cars are coming . to get onto the lane a busy dual carrageway must be crossed (prob the fastest road in the area). about 2/3 of a mile up the lane we let the dogs off, no sooner had we done this when a loud noise from a new nursing home(it wasnt there last time i went up) that is under construction startled crippen and he took off towards the very fast very busy road. i yelled at him to stay but he prob thought he was in trouble and kept on trotting.now as i ran after him he sped up. i guess you can see where this is going!!
the worst happened and he made it onto the road, all the traffic stopped and people got out of there cars. wtf could i do. i expected road kill.plus there was 2 lanes of fast traffic coming the opposite way. i caught a glimpse of him and i walked tried to run some more up the central refuge to stop him crossing. a woman and a man coaxed him to the road side with me hot on his tail.i expected blood bones and mess but there was not a fcuking scratch on him/ phew!
as look would have it the first vehicle was a range-rover towing a caravan and he managed to stop all the traffic.
now this was "good friday" one of the busiest days of the year for traffic. i was a bit of a mess to say the least..

O my god, I thought you said he died when I read the tittle. I'm so glad nothing bad happened! You were so lucky. Lesson learnt, don't let him off till you get closer to the area, that's for sure. Is his re-call normally pretty good? I really am sorry you had to experience that. I would have been shaking like a leaf. Did you end up going for the walk in the forest or dd you get go home after that? I so want to go on a forest walk, I'm jealous!

yes i thought he was dead too.
i am working on his recall and i don"t let him off leash where there are other dogs or traffic is near. he is only 6.5 mths old so the noise spooked him.
we did go on our walk, about 7 miles it was good but my legs were like jelly as i have not run like that since my school days , lol . and that is the only main road between me and sherwood forest, well part of it.

I didn't know he was still so young. Well, keep working on his re-call because he will get there, he's only a puppy after all. 7 miles, Christ! That would have been so tiring! I bet the dogs loved the walk. I hope your legs are feeling better!

Got a photo of him? I don't know if I've seen him. How did you pick his name? I love it.

Sounds like you lucky fellas cought a blessing. Iv had to watch a dog get hit. Nobody should have to see that happen, or deal with the aftermath. I hate to think about it.

mccoy. i was expecting a right mess. the woman said he ran under the range-rover. lucky it was a 4x4 with high clearance and enough weight to stop sharpish. little fcuker hasn"t left my side today. bless him.

Tahlz his name was a joke and it stuck. you can google dr crippen though. lol

This is why I don't let my dogs off leash unless there's a fence to keep them in. I don't think my heart could take a scare like that. Glad your handsome lil fella is unharmed and that no one driving was injured. I've seen a dog run across a road, far ahead of us, and people had to suddenly stop to avoid hitting it. Caused an accident between 3 cars, but the dog was fine. Honestly, if I got into an accident or almost got into an accident because of someone's loose dog I would be furious. First because of the danger to the dog and then because of the danger to motorists.

mjjean , i am careful as to when and where i let my dogs off leash. we were two thirds of a mile up an old pit lane which very few people use. he trotted all the way back to the fast road . with me getting anxious and shouting and running after him it just made him trot a little quicker.
it just goes to show that anything can and will happen. i havent run like that for 30 years, but like you say i am glad no-one was injured..

He was incredibly lucky. One way or another, they sure do find a way to give us a fright from time to time.

I totally got that from the original post. But since dogs are faster than us 2 legged creatures I just don't take the chance mine could take off and be lost or hurt. I'm a tad paranoid. Have you thought about a 50ft long lead so he gets the feel of free roaming without the risk he could head for a road again?
