Default Official Thread - Simple things to know when your in a bind
Just going to start this off because I didn't know this, and was thinking, what other little tips and tricks you should know when your in a bind.

1 - I didn't know this but I saw it work. You've got power to your car but the starter won't turn the motor. Take a hammer and hit the starter a few time. It will loosen the brushes and should get it to turn so you can start your car.

2 - Having trouble in loose sand or dirt, air down your tires to 5 psi, it will make the tire spread over a wider area giving you more traction.

3 - Warm beer, got ice? Spin the beer on the ice for about 60 seconds and it will chill the beer quickly.

4 - Got a bad cut, no where near a hospital but you've got crazy glue? Put a little on an it will seal the cut.

That's what I have for now, but I'd love for this to be living thread with additions from other members. I bet we can get a great list of ideas. The only thing I would ask is if you could cut and paste my 4 then start with 5 etc etc.

5 - to remove permanent marker from a dry erase board:

--take a paper towel, dampen it, and dip it in cigarette ashes, then firmly rub the area. the ashes act as a mild abrasive, and readily removes permanent marker ink. (works on other hard surfaces too, test in an inconspicuous area first)

6 - short term relief from poison ivy/oak:

--rinse the affected area under hot water for about a minute. the water should be as hot as you can stand without burning yourself. your brain shuts down the pain receptors and the itch goes away. this lasts for about 20 minutes or so.

7 - keeping the oil system in your engine clean:

--when you change your oil, add some transmission fluid to it. for example, if your oil reservoir takes say 4 1/2 liters to fill, add 4 1/4 liters of oil, and 1/4 liter of transmission fluid. the fluid is essentially 5 weight oil and detergents, and has an excellent cleaning effect, rinsing sludge and deposits into the oil pan where they can be removed from the system, rather than building up. i first tried this when i owned an '89 cherokee, after about 2 oil changes, i bought some new valve cover gaskets for it and was amazed how clean the inside of the covers were! they looked almost brand new! everything else under the covers was also very clean for a vehicle that had over 220,000km.

use ether to pop a tire on a rim. 90% and stand back once you light it.

If you or someone you know is having a heart attack, immediately take/give a teaspoon of red Cayenne pepper in a glass of warm water. It will stop the heart attack and save a life.

9 - If you need to unscrew a stripped head, put the flat side of a rubber band over the head then apply pressure gently and consistently with your screwdriver.

Add some valve lapping compound to the end of a screw driver to stop it from stripping the head of the screw.

12- Zippo lighter fluid easily cleans just about ANY adhesive labal residue from old peeling labels, tape, etc.

13- To get catsup, mustard, etc. that is "stubborn" out of glass bottles, invert the bottle and gently hit upward on the jar neck with the palm of your hand. Inertia will do the rest!

14- To save your life if you are snowed in in your car, carry this kit: A roll of toilet paper, a bottle of rubbing alcohol, matches, and a #10 tin can to keep it all in. If you are stranded, put the TP in the can, dump the rubbing alcohol in, and light it. It makes a weak-burning stove that will burn cool enough to not torch your car, and long enough to keep you warm through the night.

15- To remove a stuck cartridge from a reloading die, drill and tap the base of the cartridge (where the primer is), then "block" it with large washers so you can screw in a bolt which is working against the die housing (through the washers), and "pull" the cartridge out through the washers' holes. I've done this dozens of times, it never fails to work.
