Default gps navigation questions
i want to get a portable gps device for onroad and offroad navigation. accuracy and road/land detail are of most importance to me. also like it to be usable in a vehicle or on foot. i've been looking around it seems that no one unit does everything well. should i be looking at an all in one or should i go the pda with nav software root. the latter is obviously more customizable but most likely more expensive and complicated. can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I would get either a hand held unit like my Magellan Explorist 500 or a GPS adapter to connect to a PDA the only draw back to either is the screens are relatively small for in car viewing especially while atempting to drive..

Here's the Magellan web sight...

I'm fairly impressed with Garmin GPS, plus the map updates are free unlike others.

used one while in Toronto and didn't get lost at all.

heard Magellan and TomTom are good to, I know certain TomTom works with phones/pda but I'm no gps expert

Garmin all the way...best GPS systems.....make sure to buy one of the newer models like nuvi or C530,C550,C580...I have the C320 but it doesnt have the sensitive SirfStar III GPS chip which is available in all the newer models

Also don't bother with additional features that you won't use like bluetooth and MP3 playback

I use my HTC Tytn 2 PDA as a sat nav, has built in GPS which is very sensitive and gets a lock very quickly.

I use TomTom Navigator 6 with the latest version 6 maps, never has it got me lost and I drive a lot.

For off road navigating when I walk I use GPS Tuner which gives you loads of options, like speed, altitude, compass and many, many more.

If you want a customizable sat nav I would definitely go with a PDA as there are so many apps available for it
