I'm looking to get a new mobile phone after my w800 died.
I was close to getting a se p1i but I have started to sway towards a n95. has anybody got any opinions of these phones? (would like to know if the GPS on the n95 is actually worth it) also do you get map directions for free on the n95, it's just the voice directions that you need to pay for, is that correct? |

Dont get the N95 for the GPS functionality, its poor. The maps are free but you need to invest in a memory card and get them from http://www.nokia.com/maps. You can buy navigation for a week, month, year and three years.
The P1i is based on the Symbian UIQ interface so not too dissimilar to the P990i and other SE's which use the same UI. What exactly do you wnat from the handset? The N95 does allow the use of many third party apps. For example I have MSN, divx player and shoutcast radio to name but a few. It also has a fantastic camera which recordes pretty decent video too. |

If the n95 didn't have GPS then I probably would never have considered it. what is bad about the GPS system, it is the maps or the actual GPS device? |

Well, its just not very good, especially with the initial firmware. You are looking at 20mins for the the first lock, and even once that lock had been established, subsequent locks after would generally take 5 to 10minutes. It improved a lot with the second firmware and has reportedly increased in speed significantly with the 3rd firmware update.
Once its working its perfectly usable, although if you've had the joy of using something like tomtom, you might feel a little cheated. Don't forget its a massive drain on battery life, so you wouldn't want to use it away from a power source for extended periods of time. For your needs the P1i does sound like a better device. |

Really? 20 minutes for the first lock? That's ridiculous :S Bloody good job they're trying to sort it, that's gotta render it pretty unusable if you have the first firmware :S |

The P1i is plagued with the same flaws that plague the P990i, the last firmware for the P990i was released a while ago and its still not stable, apparently there will be no more.
If you want a phone that you can put in your pocket and not have to worry about it restarting in a few hours (after it restarts it requires confirmation to turn the handset back on @ phone on/off menu) or so then the newer Flagship SE's arent for you, cant believe they went so wrong after the P910i, that was an excellent phone which i still have and am forced to use as their newest offerings a joke. I still have a major problem with the P990i i have here, after a few hours the phone functionality stops working, you can still use the pda functions but when the phone aspect fails, you cant receive calls/ messages, outgoing and incoming. i thought it was a bad model i got but a lot of people are having the same problems, Howardforums.com has a lot of info and a lot of really pissed P1/P990i users I cant comment on the N95 as i have never used it or even seen it in person, but you would be doing yourself a huge favour by not touching the P990i or the P1i And just to note the P1i is not a successor to the P990i, its just a new standalone smaller offering, the successor is due in 2008 which is more than likely 2009 I cant believe SE arent facing a huge law suit for selling phone that clearly never should have been released on the market. If you cant make something work dont try and sell it |

I have played about with a N95 before and the lock time was under a minute and that was inside a pub. It was the accuracy that i didn't lile - it said i was about 2-3 miles off where i actually was. |

i'm running an N95 on the 3rd (12.xx) firmware and can confirm the GPS lock issue is much improved. assisted gps has now been implemented (uses info obtained via gprs to speed up the lock) and i get a lock from cold in about 30secs to a minute. |

Gotta agree with Slade.
P910i was the best smartphone they've released. I had the P990i for two days before returning it because it was so buggy and laggy that I just couldn't be bothered with it. P910i was really stable and I rarely had any problems with it (besides user fault because I've gone and busted the screen ![]() |

Its a real shame Nokia didn't implement some SMB stuff with the N95 and other WiFi enabled handsets as using it for file transfers is absolutely fantastic! All im saying, from personal experience and the fact I work in the mobile phone industry so have a pretty good background with the handset and a lot of customer feedback, is that it is decent for some use, but you would be better off with a stand alone unit for GPS. As a handset, the N95 is pretty hard to beat, even though megapixels doesn't relate to quality, the fact it can take such resolution images means that they are are perfect for printing out even in large sizes. The video recording again its absolutely amazing, and having the ability to plug it into a TV is even more useful. Third party apps are rife for the S60 platform the N95 uses so that means anything that you're missing can often be added thanks to the wealth of applications out there. Sure it has its limitations, but on the whole it does pretty well. |
