Default one of 2 cats died, shall we let the other "know"?
yesterday one of our 2 cats was run over outside our home.

is it better to let the other cat know of the loss by presenting the body?

i'm really at a loss here to know what's best and i would appreciate any feedback from anyone who may have a thought, even if it's just a small thought.

Yes. Animals go through this kind of thing in nature all the time. It would have less "wtf" to the cat if he saw the dead body, rather than his buddy just disappearing.

But wait for other opinions, or ask a vet.

when my cat was attacked by a dog and she was found my father (who hates cats) layed her on a towel in the dining room floor my other cat (whos the offspring off) walks in the house looks at the body walks up to it and sniffs it pauses for a second or two and walks off into the living room to lick its arse and balls .....I lost a little respect for him that day.

so there didnt seem to be any pining for tammy over the weeks by the other one that I noticed.

but you do what ever you feels right.

I hated the deaths of both my cats they were like mute family members

that's the position i'm in now.

we had 2 cats, brothers from the same mom.

grigi was the scared, nervous type with trust issues.
Nero is the simple minded, loves food, play fighting and cuddles kind that was never scared.

Nero didn't have a problem when we adopted him and grigi at about 13 weeks.
grigi always seemed to miss his mom and nothing we could do would help.

now grigi is dead i'm wondering if Nero will miss him.
nero is very independant and a total survivor. if it had been nero that died i have no idea what mess grigi would be in.

so Nero is probably going to be ok, i just want to do as much as possible for him.

the options for me seem to be:

1) in the next 24hours Nero exhibits behaviour that makes me believe that it's better to let him know grigi's dead.

2) he shows not enough enough behaviour to convince me it's option 1 is better .

yes i figured something similar.

that's why i have the corpse in the freezer to buy me some time while i figure the best option.

yes i know it's sounds odd, i'm practical like that even though i've cried non-stop since it happened 10 hours ago

Sorry to hear about your loss. It's so easy to get attached to our furry friends, that we openly accept them as being just another one of us. Mourn your loss, but don't forget the great times and the companionship your buddy offered.

My deepest condolences. [xmassad]

appreciate it dude, i know we clashed on some things before, but you just gained Kudos points for letting me know that you and understand.

i've always regretted the sense i get when i look into an animals eyes and feel that i'm severely limited in understanding them.
often i pick my cat up and look into his eyes and say:
"why can't we communicate better?".

i can know the basic needs and moods of the cats, but i want to understand more and that pains me.

i wish i could communicate more with things other than human.

i'm getting through it slowly and i know i'll be through it in a few days, i've got enough attention span that this isn't stressful enough to snap me.

i'm doing the best i can and i just need the time and energy to see me through it.

your post (and the others) helped DJ, and that means loads to me.

thank you.

A little history about myself. I grew up on a farm, though I like to use the term "petting zoo," I was surrounded by furry critters of all shapes and sizes up until these recent college years. As many of my furry friends that have passed away, it never gets easier. They come into our lives, give us happiness and peace, and then move on.

Even though we may not ever understand our furry friend's true intentions, it's always uplifting to at least see the look in their eyes when you come home, right as they snuggle up against you, or pine for the meal you're "sharing" with them. Again, sorry for your loss.

If it's not too painful to do, and you have pics, I say you should have a little memorial service to Grigi in the Cats! thread.

At one point in my life I grew up in a sort of similar environment. I lived with my grandparents in Uzbekistan for 2 years and they had some (very little) liftstock. Maybe 30 chickens, 6 turkeys, maybe occasional sheep and pigs, and rabbits...

We got 2 bunnies one day when they were still young and they quickly became my pets. Six months after taking care of them and loving them I come home one Sunday evening to find that my bunnies were made into a 3 course meal. I was made to eat them (over my crying, hysterically upset 9 year old body) and that was the worst meal of my life.

I have seen many animals slaughtered from our yard, but this is by far was the most devastating slaughter for me.

nothing changed at my end dude, all i'm seeing is...

pengwin1, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
  1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
  2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
EDIT:

the link doesn't work, but i found it through looking through the normal boards.
go figure.

I'm sorry for your loss, people do have a connection to their animals, but in this matter I have to say there is nothing to communicate with. I may get some flack for this but meh.

there is communication, even if the simple ways that pets and owners living together is not enough for you to call "communication".

the pet understands some things about you and the reverse is true also.

Grigi was a cat and learned a few things to ive with us and we learned some things about how he lives too.

that is all communication is. the learning of conveying information to another.

i love animals, and with our cats i want MORE communication as OHP said " I hated the deaths of both my cats they were like mute family members".

that is how i feel too.
i wish to experience all forms of energy in this universe.
when i have no fear and love something i wish to know more, to ba able to experience more of it.
knowing that there is limit is frustrating.

Your cat will probably be lonely for a few days but I dont think theres much of anything meaningful you can do as far as breaking the news.

So I think you can take kitty out of the freezer and bury it asap.

Be sure to bury it deep though so the grieving brother doesnt dig it up and eat it.

yeah i was thinking about burying it deep, but in the end we just thawed him out a bit and then lay him on the floor for Nero to "know".

Nero didn't seem to care much, just inspecting the body and then going out for a play and a cleaning session.

so far seems like he doesn't care too much, which i'm grateful for.

i'm reminded of the scene in the film "poltergeist", when they bury the pet in the garden and the kid is all messed up crying and ****.
then when they pat the last piece of earth down the kid bursts out with a happy smile, looks at her dad and says "can we have a goldfish now?"

****ing funny.

let him know by sticking him in the same bin bag with a pet brick and dispose of in the closest river. cats are vermin like rats and they should all be exterminated

When our dog died naturally, we let the other two see it. One didn't care (didn't like him in the first place), but the other one seemed to be depressed for a little while (both grew up from puppies together and are 10+ years old).
