Bubba's Masters win comes to mind. Bad shots happen but it is the ability to recover from them that is key. Of course when I send one straight into the drink, it is hard to find a saving grace.

Very interesting thread. Quite timely for me to read. I'm relatively new to the game and up until recently I had numerous WTF shots in most rounds. I thought there would be some point when I had it "all figured out" and then I might hit a less than perfect shot but never a WTF. I'm kind of realizing, and this thread has reaffirmed it, that hitting a smaller number of those shots as I get better is more realistic.
Yesterday I was on course for a good score(for me) 44 on the front 9. I was really jazzed when I parred 10. Then on 11 I sliced the driver OB and chunked a wood into a little creek on 18. Still broke a hundred, which is okay for me but I could taste 90 after 10 so it was quite disappointing. WTF

Haven't stop for me and doubt they ever will, but have became much less often. I had two yesterday, one a thinn'ed wedge, only one of the day. The other was a dead push hybrid into the trees 70 yards off the tee box, only one of those. It happens, you just hope that you can recover and still make a par, bogey at worse.

I don't think they ever stop, they just get further apart.

I'm not a great golfer, but I think that the pros are able to recover from those handful of bad shots per round better than us hackers (Na's forest adventure notwithstanding).

Simple example: Deep in the trees sitting in pine straw, I would have tried to chip to the middle of the fairway, not go for the green like Bubba.

They stop once you're able to shoot 18 under everytime you tee it up. Until then, it will always happen. Key is just to reduce the damage on the hole(s) it happens.

I had 18 holes of WTF shots today. From my opening tee shot I honestly had no idea what to expect. I hit two fairways, missed a couple par 3s by 20 yards. Played from adjacent fairways, the trees, harpan, rough, leaves bunkers, hit one in the water, and somehow had 3 birdies and 5 bogeys for a 74.

I've got no clue what happened today, and the last two weeks has been the best ball striking of my life. I am seriously concerned...but hard pressed to complain about a 74.

I'm always good for at least 2 fantastic WTF were you thinking shots per 9. Today I hit a beautiful lay up 3w from the tee, ball landed right where I wanted it about 10 yards from a small water hazard that completely cuts through the center of the fairway. I pull out my 5i, should be an easy controlled swing to the green and instead something in my head shorts out, I swing it like a baseball bat instead of a golf club and send a 130mph rocket straight across the grass into the other side of the hazard. It's been dry in Tx so there was no water, it was just like a deep bunker with grass instead of sand so I was able to pop it out with a wedge but that was two wasted strokes due to a brain malfunction.
