Agree OG&B.... I miss the old standing room they used to have at Subi. Nothing I hate more these days than to be stuck sitting cramped in those plastic seats for 3 hours. But what other choice do we have these days.
If they had a standing room option I would give up my seat tomorrow. Another thing with standing room is you would lift the capacity of the size. If they did that at the City end of Subiaco Oval and ripped out about 5000 seats behind the goals, they would fit in about 8000 in standing room easy. But new designers only see these things in terms of "seats". Standing room is much better I agree 100%. There should always be an option at least. |

The State Government will make the final decision on design aspects at a new stadium but the WAFC will be in regular contact to discuss contemporary needs. This includes everything from seating arrangements to the number of catering venues and car parks, suitable public transport and access to parking so that getting to and from the stadium is safe and quick.

Well i hope the government realises the paying public is the No 1 client and hence it is the public that should be consulted on the design aspects which include seating width, leg room (please don't have the airline industry mentality and cram us in like cattle), toilet facilities, food and beverage facilities transport to and from the ground which must cater for BOTH public transport and private transport, the ability to get in and out of the stadium both inside the stadium and outside it. For instance the room outside Subiaco Oval is totally inadequate, you virtually take 3 or 4 steps and you are on the road.

If they simply get on a plane and visit Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, then they might get an idea of how a stadium should be built. In terms of public facilities (seating space, access to toilets, hardly any lines for food & drink) then this stadium is the one to model off. Having been there several times, it is first class and it is the reason I hate Subiaco Oval as a venue now. Before that I thought Subi was adequate. Going to Etihad & Subiaco now is like going from New York to Afganistan.
They have one chance to get this right. Design it so its 100% flawless. They must look at the next 100 years, not the next five. |

i think its asking a bit too much for a government to look at the next 100 years... that would be doing the smart thing. How much of a stuff up band aid effort was the last re development of subi... lessen the capacity from 50 thou to 45 thou.. well done, brilliant stuff fellas. May as well have poured all that dough down the drain. Look at the other states, all have extremely good footy set ups. But not us, no. Bloody hopeless.
Designing a new stadium should be pretty basic stuff really. Don't worry about winning bloody architecture awards, just have a two tier stand going around an oval, good seating, as much undercover as possible, build it strong, 70 to 80 thousand capacity.. and some standing room, but i know i'm dreamin there. |
