Default Expression tied to our emotions?
How much of our facial expression is tied to our emotions?

Go up to someone and try to tell them off and maintain a smile. I tried today and it went all wrong and the laughed at me When I try on an angry face and tell someone I love them it just feels intense, not angry at all.

(Hi, 'Nut')

How can our facial expressions be tied to anything *but* our emotions?

What else can they be tied to.

I don't know, I guess I am wondering if they are controlled from the same part of the brain or something.... perhaps there is an upward causality whereby if you carry an angry face around you start to feel angry also?

Do they necessarily need to be "tied to" anything?

Body language is a similar thing, but if you break it down our limbs' positions are independent of emotion (mostly) but in combination can express particular emotions ... but I think (not sure) that's cultural) and I think (not sure) that what Nut is referring to is more likely genetic (given the similar facial expressions / emotions connections in the great apes.

I like what you are thinking
and I'm addicted to bleeding obvious emotional cues.
Saves a lot of costly mistakes

I am going to go around with a big smile on my face for the next week and see if I am happy the whole time. Could be awkward if I feel the need to swear at anyone

It's not all about YOU you know!*

YOU might feel the strain and be miserable, but think of all the people who feel better for having received a smile

In most people, facial expressions give a fair clue, to a keen observer, of what they are thinking/feeling. But others can train themselves to hide their motivations, or are just born with the skill to lie.

I tried smiling when I didn't really feel like, for a while in my teenage years. Didn't improve how I felt, was just tiring, and probably looked obviously faked to others.

Probably an argument there has been a Standard Social Science Model that the question should get asked.

"Human Universals is a book by Donald Brown, an American professor of anthropology (emeritus) who worked at the University of California, Santa Barbara. It was published by McGraw Hill in 1991. Brown says human universals, "comprise those features of culture, society, language, behavior, and psyche for which there are no known exception." He is quoted at length by Steven Pinker in an appendix to The Blank Slate, where Pinker cites some of the hundreds of universals listed by Brown"

My personal opinion is that emotion is very strongly tied into body motion. Not necessarily just facial expressions.

Pfft I still do that every day Doesn't normally make me feel better but it does remind me not to say what I'm thinking... *whistles innocently* OTOH, changing your body language can give you an emotional boost when you need it- pull up your shoulders and stand up straight can immediately improve your emotional state and boost your confidence.

Mums go ok, but then my opinion is why am I forced to cover my feelings just because you (not you Transition but in general) happen to be a d**khead.

Social convention.
Usually the person is being a d**khead by breaking social convention first

But then in some places that seems to be the convention.
