In this case, the unbelievably high score can be explained by a certain wish fulfillment on the part of a highly energized fanbase. If you'll recall, the new Indiana Jones received an 8.6 on imdb in its first week but quickly dropped to a 7.0.
but you could also say that high expectations are much harder to fullfilll like it happens a lot with games

AFI is another populist ranking that doesn't have much credibility and why would anyone value what the average person on the street thinks?

Having the most votes on imdb isn't a noteworthy distinction, IMO, it just indicates a lot of people have seen the film, which one can already judge from box office sales. The score will drop like that craptastic Indy.
You really think you're that much better than everyone else? That you're that much higher than the average person?

I personally care what the average human being thinks, because it reflects our general population. I care a LOT more about what the average movie-goer thinks then some snotty egocentric critic.

Seriously, isn't that why many of us use these forums? To gather opinions from random normal people about things? jeesh.

I wasn't highlighting just that TDK has a lot of votes(it DOESNT have the most votes, no where near it).

I was just saying, that after 47k votes, NO MOVIE EVER HAS HAD A RATING AS HIGH AS TDK. AFTER THAT NUMBER OF VOTES, NO MOVIE HAS EVER RETAINED A RATING AS HIGH AS TDK HAS.

Meaning, for the amount of votes cast, no movie has ever kept as high of a score as TDK. And at this rate, with this ratio of voting to score placing, when you factor in the number of votes, TDK will remain #1 on imdb(there's a chance we will be surprised, if the number pattern completely and drastically changes it may drop but it will CERTAINLY stay within the top 10).

I just can't think of any other ways to word it anymore.

I just... Seriously, am I making this clear or not, everyone!?!? I feel like no one is comprehending what I'm typing at all!

I saw the movie on IMAX last night and it was by far the single most incredible movie going experience I have ever had in my life. The film itself blew me away with great acting, plot, characters, and action. Also, the upscaled 35mm to 70mm scenes looked brilliant and then the scenes that were actually shot on 70mm were simply out of this world. (The first movie to actually be partially shot on this huge film stock.)

Then of course there was the uncompressed audio pumping out of the 14,000+ watt audio system. [thumbup]

I'm very jealous. My theater is alright, just DLP projectors with mediocre speakers(don't know what they're using).

The score will go down though, Wall-E had a 9.3 at first too.

Do i need to see batman begins before this one?

You should as it is fantastic, but it's not really required.

This is my tops best movie experience ever. I watched it at a brand new Galaxy theaters (HD, DLP cinema) with extremely good sound.

I saw some 20 year plus move critic rave for 5 minutes...comparing it with the all time classics, etc...before I watched it and I thought he went off his rocker. Well he was right.

Hard to say if I can look back in 5 years and say it, but now I do feel it might be the best movie of all time. Not because it has the most in depth social statement (although it makes plenty) or is so high brow (actually does well here too, with one of the best acting performances ever)...but because it does those things, while not sacrificing one ounce of "fun" and escapism.

It has the full meat and potatoes of incredible acting and depth...but while being one of best at serving the popcorn escapism.

That just is almost never done. And it does it for 2 and a half hours...with practically zero faltering of any type, honestly I am in awe of what has been done with the film, how it hits both the summer crowd and the critics.

The Lord of the Rings in its entirely, if I could cut some of the fluff and faltering would beat it IMO...but for a tight overall single film....Dark Knight is just amazing.

if the prat wasn't dead it wouldn't get anywhere near as much.
Yes it would have. I can't imagine someone watching this with any open mind and not thinking that was one of the better acting performances there has been. I never saw Ledger...just the most completely realized psychotic criminal. He was truly scary...

$155.4 million in its' opening weekend, topping the former champ, Spider-man 3, which opened at 151 million.

What's MORE interesting is the NEVER ENDING accolades that this film has(rightfully) been receiving.

After a whopping 47 THOUSAND votes on IMDB, The Dark Knight currently sits as the #1 movie of all time, rated a 9.7 from the 47k users.
And it hasnt even opened world wide yet!

Have you seen the movie or are you just being ignorant and looking for attention?

I take it by that logic you also bought Lil Wayne's CD this week? Why would you care what the average movie goer thinks? Surely of much greater value is what like minded people think of a film. You are either an individual with certain taste or I take it you are an automaton who just wants to follow the general population cos they think it's cool. There's plenty of things I love that most people wouldn't like and there's plenty of things that have been hugely popular which seemed plain stupid to me.

But while we are at it IMDB votes do not reflect the general population a quick scan of those figures shows that 90% of the votes came from Males, over 2/3rd from Males aged 18-29. Take a look almost all the time 2/3rd of the vote for any IMDB film come from Males aged 18-29. Even it's a Wonderful Life Am I surprised that a film like The Dark Knight would make it to the top of a list of films voted for by 18-29 year males? No and by extension I don't think the fact that they did vote it No. 1 on opening weekend suggests it's the greatest film as assessed by the general population.

The movie gets a 8 out of 10 from me, there are quite a few flaws that people seem to ignore and instead become blinded by the hype. Heath's joker was inconsistent in a few parts. For instance, he seemed to want to kill Batman at first, yet later he finds him as his superhero counterpart? To me, Heath's and Jack's joker are lacking the original jokers characteristics that the other one needs.

Christopher Nolan's Batman movies have always been characterized as "realistic", while this one was as far-fetched as it could be. A device that monitors all of the cell phones in Gotham and exerts a sonar pulse allowing Lucius to see through walls and located the Joker? Please.....

Two-faces introduction into the movie is so late and lacking of any sense that it makes you really wish he was never in it. I honestly wish that they would have just ended the movie after his transformation so that we wouldn't have to watch the kindest person in the movie transform from the white knight of the city to a cruel *******.

I could honestly go on and on with flaws of this movie but I wont. I did like Heath's joker in some parts (Him dressed as a nurse leaving the building while it exploded) but I hated him in others (Him and Batmans duel on the top of the skyscraper). As much as I am saddened to hear of Heath's death, I do feel that his death has caused this movie to become so much more than it really is.

So many people gave this film a rating of 10, but I cant justify that with the blatant amount of flaws in this movie, its a great movie, one worth seeing. But not deserving of the perfect scores and people proclaiming it to be a flawless movie and the best movie ever. Most of these people seem to have seen very little movies in their time, the hype will eventually die down.

I don't just blindly follow what the general public likes, but of course I take into consideration what ANY other person would tell me is good. I'm not above being open minded enough to give something other people like a chance. I don't have to go out of my way to listen to music and watch movies that are 'different' and 'unique'.

And after listening to and watching different suggestions I choose what I like best.

How the hell do you do it? Go into best buy and randomly pick a movie that you've never heard of? We ALL take peoples opinions to see what's out there.

For the record, I never listen to the radio because I hate what's played on it. Some of my favorite bands are Stars, The Knife, and Broadcast. I bet you've never heard of any of them. Some of my favorite movies are 2001: A space Odyssey, Lost in Translation, and The Fountain.

The Dark Knight ISNT even a 10/10 for me! I give it a solid 9/10 but I acknowledge and understand why it's rated so high, and I think it deserves it. It didn't get a 10/10 from me because it didn't touch me in any personal way, it didn't change my way of thinking about things, and it wasn't something absolutely life changing. But that's for me personally. I just really respect how it has perfected its' appeal to pretty much everyone. Reminds me of the LOTR trilogy in that way.

After coming back from seeing it tonight (just got back) I'd give it a very solid recommendation. It was quite long and jumped around alot but the acting was top notch. It also lived up to all of it's hype.

Is it the best movie I've ever seen? No, But it was very good. Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker was absolutely amazing.
