Find an exercise activity you enjoy, and the pounds will drop. In addition to the burned energy during exercise, an hour of good exercise increases the calorie burn greatly for the next 14 hours or so of.
I like ultra marathon cycling, which can be an extreme caolrie burner because it's possible to go on for so long. The most I have burned in one effort is ~4800 kcal in 9 hours on a 235 km ride, which is pretty crazy amount of calories for someone who only weighed 63 kg. On a regular three hour ride I burn ~1300-1700 kcal. A heavier person burns a lot more. The cool thing about long distance cycling is that you can treat yourself afterwards. You actually have to.[thumbup] I weighed ~75 kg in 2008 and have stabilized at around 62 kg now, and I haven't been trying to lose weight. An overweight person who tried to lose weight through exercise would do so quicker than me. Chicken and turkey breasts are lean and taste well with a good sauce and a salad. Don't fall for "alternative" schemes with no science to back them up. |

Thats good advice. When someone needs lose weight, simply point them to a Wiki article about the law of thermodynamics. Actually better yet, just stick to number crunching in your stuffy cubicle. [xmascandle] Magic does not exist. All biology is bound by the same rules of the universe. Poking a bunch of holes in this topic will not relieve anything. In fact, poking a bunch of holes in anything hardly ever gets any results. |

You simplify this topic too much. Humans are too complex for charts and rules of thumb. Did the poster ask for an essay on advanced fitness techniques?... No... He asked for some guidelines for losing weight... There is no other way to do that other then guidelines which have been established... If he follows what I said he will lose weight... I think I managed to sum up the basics pretty well and made quite a helpfull post but oh well some people will always moan about something :/ |

Hmm why would you want to lose weight from 75kg down to 62kg.... 75kg is a normal weight whereas 62kg is pretty puny and underweight for a male weight. 62 kg puts me in the low end of normal bmi, if that's important to you. Read what I wrote again. |

Gordon... is that you? ![]() Soup is a darned good idea, though, because of the way the body processes it it stays in the stomach a lot longer, reducing the feeling of hunger for longer. Other things that will help burn off calories would be wearing less clothing, using less heating - the body will burn more calories to maintain body temperature - walking and using stairs where practical, etc. Not a big difference, but it all helps. |

Biking is useless. As Gnius said, just eat some soup. *You yourself said "... I feel adding cardiovascular exercise to your lifestyle is one of the few ways to permanently keep weight off. Thirty-minutes of cardio about 5 days a week will help you shed weight, and keep it off. .." GNIUS was dismissing 30 minutes of biking (a low impact cardio-vascular exercise) and my comment was because some people barely turn the pedals and others go flat out [the benefits] would depend on how hard one pedalled. As an aside, top cyclists are supposedly producing more than 1 horsepower at times, certainly a significant use of energy and even an enthusiastic cycle machine user should be using a significant amount of energy. As I doubt you've ever tried riding any form of bike, let alone 'riding' it hard, I expect you'll also dismiss that. |

Sarcasm my friend. Please read the thread. Most people don't realize how few calories they burn during low/medium intensity exercise. Also, stick to the original topic. You were going to prove to everyone that dieting was not enough to lose weight without exercise, and you were going to do it using your references above. Obviously you were not saying that it merely helps to exercise, since you would be agreeing with me. What you are saying is correct, but has no bearing on the fact that cutting calories IS enough... just not ideal. For many patients exercise is a deal breaker. Thus, I have no qualms about recommending calorie cutting alone to lose weight. Would it be better to exercise as well? Yes of course. But more often than not people use exercise as an excuse not to cut enough calories off their diet... and of course then they go on to exercise much less than necessary... and don't lose any weight. Seen enough of that. |

i dont think i could do 1000 a day lol, to maintain my current weight im at around 3000 calories a day so even dropping down to 2000 is a big drop, dropping to 1000 would be crazy i think for me And youŽd be equally surprised how much rice you can eat and still stay under 1000cal. |
